server assigned ip - resolv.conf help!

Hi,

I'm  having an internet connection problem I'm hoping you can help with?! I just recently bought a serial port dial up modem to use with kubuntu (it works elsewhere!)... when i opened up kppp I got an error message saying /etc/resolv.conf was missing but that it could be empty... so I created an empty file... and changed the permissions. The error message disappeared, but it still wouldn't recognise my modem... so I looked through the forums here... one post seemed particularly useful in telling me to find the primary and secondary dns servers from my isp and putting them into resolv.conf myself, however, when I called the ISP they said that it was all server assigned and they couldn't help me... So I'm stuck again! Please help!

just to make sure this would resolve your problem, copy nameserver 195.186.4.108 to your /etc/resolv.conf and give it another try ... if now your modem connects as expected, please do yourself a favour and try to find an ISP worth being named that way ... (what they told you is simply <censored>).

Remark: due to the fact that the nameserver mentioned above is located in Switzerland, things might take time - depending on where you are located ...

Thanks very much, yes, that did work! But we don't really have the option of finding a new isp - is there an alternative way to solve this?

A good DNS server I use is 4.2.2.2 and the other ones in that series:

4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3

Those are all the ones I use, even though my ISP tells me not to use them. All they can do is frown.

I have COX, and I found those DNS servers are faster than the ones COX told me to use!
