Kubuntu Install Broke My Windows =(

    Hey guys,

Noob in need of help here... I just installed Kubuntu on the computer that I'm on right now. I have 2 drives, but during the install I selected that I wanted Kubuntu installed on the same drive as Windows XP Home in a new partition. I allocated about 30 Gigs for Kubuntu, and the remaining ~90 Gigs I left for Windows (Windows had something like 60 Gigs used on C:\)

Now when I reboot my system, one of the boot options is Windows XP Home, but when I select it, it tries to come up but stops pretty quickly after it shows the little Windows progress bar and the system restarts automatically. As you can see, Kubuntu is now working fine and there are no problems there...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I still need my Windows =(

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hello,

Both partion where existing partitions and no reformating of the primairy disk was done.

See if it will boot into safe mode...press F8 repeatedly

if it wont boot into safe mode, then perhaps the problem can be indentified/solved with the recovery console:

It doesn't boot into safe mode, I already tried that... Which option should I use once I log into the recovery console? If I rewrite the boot partition with fixmbr will that leave me unable to boot into kubuntu?

Windows doesn't boot in safe mode.
Do you mean the recovery console from kubuntu ?
because the windows recovery isn't  accessible.

the primary hda is called HDA 0 and the bus is 0
the bootloader is configured for that .

I' ve tried to reinstall the Win XP, the installation program show only 1 harddrive called 0 and located on bus 0, the Win XP installation program can not acces this HDD

it seems that window has no more acces to the hard drive...?

I have run kubuntu previously without any problem with a coexisting Win XP but this time when upgrading with a downloaded live CD, the Win XP isn't accessible any more
          Verry strange.
I hope that some expert can give any idee to fix this probleme.
If not a total formating of my HDD and reinstallation of the Win XP seems the only thing to do and perhaps without any succes (because the probleme maybe still be there)

an other solution is to work with a independent bootloader
Are there such bootloaders for free?

          Regards

            Hey all,

I was able to fix this by using the Windows Recovery Console (after booting using the Windows XP CD) and then using "CHKDSK C: /P"

Hope this helps others who run into this situation!

Re: Kubuntu Install Broke My Windows =(

              fixed !

              first delete the Kubuntu installation
Fix the MBR in windows recovery mode
install a boot program in windows xp
              reinstall kubuntu
with the recovery CD from the bootloader the bootloader gets all the OS in line and you have the choise to boot each os installed on your PC.

But it seems also possible to configure GRUB so that it also reconise your windows. but I've not experenced this for the moment.

              good luck
              C

              thanks

Re: Kubuntu Install Broke My Windows =(

i tried it with one hdd and worked fine
it easy-er if u install winxp in an ntfs (any win in its partition) and then install kubuntu on top in its ext3
grub detects all windows filesystems and configures it correctly
it would be best if u make an extra partition for the home folder
so if u have to reinstall win or linux u don't kill all ur files or make an lousy reinstall of linux
reinstalling without formatting will leave all updated files but linux wont use them n u will have tons of crap in it (all fixable but annoying)
its also good if u safe all ur files in home (win wont be able to use them)
i think if u reinstall win u will have to edit the grub manually

                i.e
                1 hdd
                sda1 ntfs win
                sda2 ext3 / (root folder) linux
                sda3 linux-swap
                sda4 ext3 /home
any combination is possible but its best to make ur OS parts before the tons of files

also win cant read the linux ext3 >

                some useful data 8)
                if u dual boot
with linux check the win and see all the files u could not see under win (even if u unhide system files win doesn't show them all)
win is so stupid it believes its the master of the PC but linux knows better
