How do you play Mov and AVI files?

The documentation I have seen says to install the win32codecs which I have done. This allowed me to play wma files. However I still cannot play video files.

    http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#H...timedia_Codecs

The documentation on this is outdated.

    root@chep-linuxversion:/home/ray# sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree... Done
Package gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg has no installation candidate
    root@chep-linuxversion:/home/ray#

      See "Restricted Formats" on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

gstreamer is g(nome)streamer and is used on Ubuntu, more than Kubuntu

You could solve most of your problems by installing Automatix

Thanks for the tips. I had to wait several days because I moved from one place to another. I recommend automatix as well.

lol i had an unrelated problem but i figured it out thanks to the automatix recomendation (i looked at it and in the install it told me how to edit the channels list manually) but ya all you need are some good libraries, i have them but they are in rpm, i need to find a way to get the files out of them, and convert to dev

Hy! Use "alien" it converts rpm in deb files.
example sudo alien -k hallo.rpm then you get a hallo.deb file which you can install with sudo dpkg -i hallo.deb.

              Have fun!
