    Niggling Problems

I'm new to Linux and decided to go for Kubuntu.  I do however have a few problems that are annoying me which would be nice to fix.

Firstly, are there actually any good software firewalls and anti-virus that will work with Kubuntu?

Secondly, I can't play MP3's.  Yes I have read all of the other bits of the forum but when I try to download xine extra codecs, Adept just says BREAK! in red letters and doesn't install.  I can't even find the DVD ones...

Thirdly, as a major Ventrilo user, its annoying that WINE won't seem to catch my key clicks for when I want to talk.

Fourthly, I cannot initialise a server in WINE mode because it doesn't apparently support DirectPlay or something.

Fifthly, I can't install Limewire because Kubuntu doesn't know what a .rm file is, or it does know and is offended by it..

Ahhh, that feels better, can anyone help me with the above problems please?

    Re: Niggling Problems

After searching these forums ALL DAY to fix these problems, I still have only managed to sort out an antivirus and a firewall (though if they are working or not I don't know).

I'd like to start by saying that Adept is possibly the most frustrating thing I have ever had the misfortune of using. NOTHING will work.

    So anyway, the source files...

As you can probably see, I tried using Automatix aswell for which I got this error:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Limewire was also unsuccessful. After asking me to upgrade to Java 1.4.x although I already had 1.4.6.

So on my first (internet) day on Kubuntu, can I ask the question:

    DOES ANYTHING ACTUALLY WORK?

Sorry if I sound annoyed but I'm sure you've all been here before and you know how frustrating it is..

      Re: Niggling Problems

Your problems with Adept may be with the gb.archive. Have a look at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=450992

Don't use Adept - use Synaptic Package Manager it's much better.

        Re: Niggling Problems

Thanks very much for that, Synaptic did the trick and solved most of my problems. You are the ****** man

I still however cannot seem to play mp3s. I do now have the xine extra codecs, but Amorok gives me an error saying "Xine claims that it cannot play this type of file....etc etc " (I keep missing the last bit). I have installed WINE, Apollon, half of Cedega (apparently I'm missing xlibs version 4?) and one or two other things though none concerning codecs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated please.

        Thanks

Have you seen the page about Ubuntu Restricted Formats on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats ?

For someone starting out I would advocate installing Automatix. I have been shot down for suggesting it, but I like it. It gets over a lot of problems. See http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#H...2C_and_Xubuntu

            Re: Niggling Problems

Yeah I saw that thanks and followed instructions there before to end up in the previous mess.

Actually xine seems to have sorted itself out for some reason, I didn't actually do anything but it works so I'm gonna leave it alone and hope for the best :P

Thanks for your help guys, I'm just about to install KDevelop so I'm sure I'll be posting again soon
