Some ideas, since you've called urgency...

You could try pressing ctrl-alt-f2 to get a text console, and log in that way. Some configuration may be screwed up, and if you knew what it was you could delete it. I'd check drive space, a full drive can present with a stalled login. Looking at the end of .xsession-errors, or /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or the other log files in /var/log might tell you what's going wrong. Another approach is to add another user with sudo adduser learning2 and see if you can log in as that user in the GUI on ctrl-alt-f1.

By "sleep" I am assuming you mean suspend to RAM. If that is what you are doing then If, while sleeping, your system drains the battery, or, you flip the power switch, then that state of suspension will be lost. It can also change the ownership of the user's hidden file, .Xauthority. You can check that by booting into a root terminal, changing your drive to rw, and displaying /home/youracctname/.Xauthority. If it is owned by root then use chown to change it to yourname:yourname.

If .Xauthority is owned by you then you may have a broken video driver. Logging into root you can re-install that..
