[System] blank desktop after new install

Just installed kubuntu and I have nothing on the desktop, just the "wallpaper" with no application launcher or bar on the side/bottom of the screen.

I can access the internet by opening krunner and launching firefox.

Sounds like your default user settings didn't completely install (like the plasma config) or something else went wrong during installation. Assuming you verified the ISO before installing from it, you might try launching the System Settings from krunner (type systemsettings5 and then Enter) and see if you can add a second user. Then, log in as that user and see if you get the same results. If so, you'll probably be best off just re-installing because there's no easy way of telling what else went wrong. If the new user works OK, you can log out and then hit ALT-F2 and log into the terminal. Then swap home folders using sudo chown and renaming them and you should be good to go.
