Laptop --> External Monitor

Hi all,

I have really been trying to love Linux for the past 3-4 years but just get so annoyed sometimes when the simplest things take so much working out!!

I have a Dell Inspiron 9000 and want to be able to connect my external monitor but just cannot manage. Can anyone help at all, please!?
