    SMPlayer 19.10 not installing

i have tried several times now to get smplayer 19.10 to install in kubuntu 19.10 64 bit with no luck. the version via discover is outdated. 19.10 has been out for a good while noe. i've used the following but keep getting this error:

    Code:
    [FONT=monospace][COLOR=#54FF54][B]gravedigger@Digger[/B][/COLOR]:[COLOR=#5454FF][B]~[/B][/COLOR]$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer
    [sudo] password for gravedigger:
    Packages for SMPlayer.

To install SMPlayer from this PPA, run these commands on a terminal:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install smplayer smtube smplayer-themes smplayer-skins

The maintainer of that PPA has not made builds for 19.10 Eoan. You need to contact them.

        Hi
without repeating my self too much I regularly install EVERY KIND OF MEDIA PLAYER available to "test" them.

I'm running Kubuntu 19.04 and was able to get it through the normal repos. HOWEVER, I did have to install some extra GUI libraries etc to have it display in multimedia /

thanks but in kubuntu 19.04 the latest smplayer installs and runs without issue without having to jump through any hoops, it's kubuntu 19.10 that you can only install version 18.10 or older of smplayer.

be forewarned this is a rant. i am getting more than a little tired of seeing the kind of message as below. i'll be blunt that when a new os is released i expect the software i've had installed on the old version to simply work on the new os when i go to install it. i do not expect to have to install old versions and or wait for something as simple as flatpaks to be properly supported. in my book this is on the os and software makers. the os before it is ever put out for general download and install should be handed off to the various 3rd part software and driver creators so they can get their apps updated for it. then after x amount of time rather they have their software updated or not the os gets released for general use. i figured since the below is the same reason i couldn't install the latest smplayer this thread was the best place for this post. rant done.

            Code:
[FONT=monospace]E:The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/alexlarsson/flatpak/ubuntu eoan Release' does not have a Release file.

I'll be a little blunt here.
If you want the latest and greatest software versions then you probably want to run a "rolling" distro such as Arch, or a source based one like Gentoo.

No traditional distro will have everything at the latest version without some work, or be missing some thing that may not be as widely used or popular.

In the case is smplayer, you are ranting that the volunteer who has a PPA hasn't yet created a package of it for 19.10, which they may not even be using yet, or maybe is having trouble building for it. Or simply does not have the time. I have experience with this, having maintained My own Personal Package Archive . You come across as demanding that i should have builds for every version immediately upon a new *buntu release. That I am obligated to take the time and effort to do so.

Believe it or not, I am not offended by this. I see this all the time. People just forget that in Linux things are primarily done by volunteers and we sometimes forget that things are not run like businesses or companies all that much.

Great expectations, I guess, but not entirely reasonable.
We lose stuff all the time.
Just the move from Plasma 4 to 5 was... like a mass extinction event. :·)
And some of the stuff we lost was among the best and brightest.

We just learn to find alternatives or workarounds, or simply live with the loss.

@claydoh i'm not only talking about the "latest and greatest", i'm referring to some apps that i have in 19.04 that are a couple of versions back cause i like those versions or i just could not see updating what's working, but they won't install, so it's not just the latest versions that 19.10 is having issues with. now as for setting up 19.10 to use flatpaks that should be working right out of the gate. i basically just want a version of a program i like to install. like with smplayer i can live with the 18.10 till they update 19.10 or newer to work with ubuntu 19.10. i chose kubuntu cause it doesn't leave one wanting like ubuntu does and it beats neon hands down. now that said as a stated that was just a rant about something that should of worked right out of the gate (flatpaks), i'm more than happy to find work arounds for other software if needed.

as for "Believe it or not, I am not offended by this" nothing to be offended about. one does not get upset when someone is simply venting and it's not aimed at anyone in particular.

don i've seen your post here and in other forums and more times than not you are not helpful, so please refrain from commenting on my threads. i won't hesitate to add you to the ignore list if i have to.

@claydoh found a work-around for flatpak. regardless of the creators claims the ppa isn't the only way to install the tools needed for flatpaks.
