    WiFi not scanning

    Hi
I have an identical problem on 2 different desktops, 1 home, 1 at work
I have a good wifi signal and can access internet through phone and tablet.
However, Network Connection on Kubuntu 18.04 does not scan available wifi networks. I have tried to enter values into network connections config page but there is no ability to connect.
    Any advice?
    Thanks
    Brian

I have a possibly related problem - I inherited a computer with Kubuntu 18.04 installed, but the previous user might have removed all network interfaces - or maybe some automatic Kubuntu update broke everything (i saw some discussion about a recent mega-bug like that).
Some days ago, the computer did work, using WiFi.
Now, I can't ping anything via WiFi or Ethernet (ping 8.8.8.8 says "network unreachable").
I cannot run "ifconfig" (it is not installed, and I cannot install anything)

How do I get back on track (putting Kubuntu 18.04 in its most innocent mode)?
I am new to Kubuntu, but far from a newbie on Ubuntu/Linux/Unix. I used Unix at a time when the Internet consisted of only 2000 connected computers...

/etc/networks/interfaces lists only a "lo" interface (no "eth**" or "wifi*" interfaces).
lscpi -l reveals that I have 00:1f.6 Ethernet Controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (4) I219-LM (rev 21), Kernel driver in use: e1000e. Kernel modules: e1000e

I am thinking of scrapping this installation completely, and start over with vanilla Ubuntu, but I REALLY did not like the unfriendly answers to requests for help for Ubuntu server issues (other computers) at Ubuntu One and askubuntu.com (an even worse user experience than Windows...). Please talk me out of moving to Ubuntu!

            Welcome to KFN.

"I inherited a computer...." I'd suggest downloading a current Kubuntu 18.04 .iso and burn it to a bootable USB stick, then boot from that. Test everything out. IF Internet works from the Live environment, then everything should be fine with an installation from that USB stick.

When one gets a PC from 'someone', and things aren't working as expected, there's simply no real reason not to 'start afresh' so that you know what you have. Just my .
