[Installation] Dell Inspiron 13 Model 7386 i5-8265U Installation issue

I have successfully installed Kubuntu on an older Dell XPS laptop and Manjaro on an HP Spectre. I specifically bought the Dell in the title to use a Linux machine. After adjusting the Bios I was able to boot Kubuntu 18.10 from a USB and run a live session with no issues, connected to wifi, surfed the web, open Libre Office etc. I then installed 18.10 as the only OS on the drive and that seemed to go well until the end where it said it could not access something and then spewed out numerous Linux error messages. Also tried the latest Manjaro with similar result.

I am just enough of a geek to be dangerous so this is a bit over my head. This is a new Dell model with Whiskey lake cpu and the Bios seemed to have more options related to security than I remember from the older dell. I suspect that I have not configured the Bios correctly and that is the issue. I was concerned about Whiskey lake but because it runs the live session fine that seems to not be the problem. I have managed to get Win10 back on the machine but really intended it as a Linux machine so help would be appreciated.

Sounds like Windows 10 is on the hard drive, and you wish to add Kubuntu to the hard drive (and then be able to dual boot Windows and Kubuntu)? If so, this may help, my report of how I did this on a laptop recently:

Dual Boot Your Existing Windows 8/10 with Kubuntu

See if some of that rings a bell or helps. If you are still stuck, post back and some of us here may be able to help some more.

can you go to the live session and install inxi sudo apt install inxi then issue inxi -Fxz and post the output here.

I want to replace Win10 and have a LINUX ONLY machine. I have done that on two other machines without issue but on this new Dell it will run a live session but will not successfully boot once Linux is on the drive. My question is there something about the most recent Dell hardware that Linux is not happy with or is it something else. I will try kc1di's suggestion and see what happens.

it may be something to do with the "nvme0n1" drive , I think I saw some discussion on a similar problem hear somewhere.

some of the error messages may be of help .

              What Vinny said.

And, what I sort of implied in my Post #2 above: just for the heck of it, make sure you are installing the Kubuntu in UEFI mode ... You can see a brief section of another of my how-to's:

              UEFI Simplified, a quicker version

              Read just the section titled,

Just to clarify, does the install fail, or you manage to install and the error happens on first boot?

Thank you to everyone who responded, I am posting this from a fully installed Kubuntu on the Dell Inspiron. The key, as suggested, was to install in UEFI mode which involved in my getting better acquited with the Dell Bios setup program. The last critical part was, at least for Dell computers, is to set the SATA mode to AHCI otherwise I was getting a ubi-partman error code 141.

That's correct. Dell and Lenovo set their Intel drives to RAID mode, even in single drive setups.

It is also possible that any bios update done may reset things back to raid mode. Just something to note on the off chance that Dell sets it up like Lenovo does. My Lenovo has had a farly decent number of bios updates the past few months, I think because of the Spectre thing, and I of course forget to change the drive setting every time lol
