Kubuntu failed to boot after installation

I installed Kubuntu 18.4.x and it ran after it was installed, the first reboot after install. But the next time I tried to run it
I got this message but I am a pure newbie and have no idea what it means or what to do.

    Welcome to Linux and KFN.

That is called a "grub prompt" and it means for some reason grub cannot boot your installation.

"Plasma 5" refers to the Desktop Environment we use (aka KDE) so I am editing this thread with a more appropriate title so you get better response. Plasma 5 has zero to do with your issue at this moment.

So what changed or what did you do between reboots?

    Just so we're clear:
    • You installed Kubuntu 18.04 in some unknown manner without a hitch.
    • You rebooted after installation and it booted up fine.
    • You did some stuff.
    • You rebooted again and you got the above grub prompt.

We need to know what "Stuff" you did in between.

Usually this can mean the drive you installed to or partition is no longer available or grub is mis-configured some how.

    You basically have two options;
    1. Just reinstall and try again. This time paying careful attention to what you're doing so maybe rebooting a few times before doing anything, just to be sure.
    2. You can manually boot to your installation, re-install grub, and move ahead.

#1 will be the easiest, but you won't learn anything from doing it.
#2 will require you to learn more about booting and how it works and researching some new info.

    Your choice.

If you choose the path of learning, first learn how to gather some information and post it here so anyone might have a clue what you're dealing with. Some of us here are pretty good at problem solving these sort of things, but no one can read minds - in short, we need actual info.

A good start might be a quick read of my post linked in my sig below "Please Read Me". Regardless whether you pick #1 or #2 above, learning how to post on forums effectively will go a long way toward getting you help and helping you learn.

It appears maybe there is an issue with the HDD or the removable HDD device I had the HDD in. I connected the HDD directly and it booted fine.
I will boot a few more times today to see if I can duplicate and if not then it appears it's an issue with the removable device.
      Thanks

P.S. I don't see any sig on the message.

Well, there you go. grub was trying to find the drive and couldn't thus the error. I agree with your assessment.

I would like to point out that you have illustrated the point I was trying to make: no info means no help. If you had stated at the get-go that you were trying to boot to an external device instead of internal you might have gotten some advice.

I can;t imagine why you're not seeing my sig - maybe it's a setting you have to enable. Regardless, if your interested in reviewing my suggestion: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...-the-smart-way
