My Goal is to eventually be able to finally kick windows off my machine for good. I have spent the last few weeks reviewing distros and really like the Kubuntu setup. I have slowly worked through any issues I have had and now want to get to installing games on here.

I have spend the last 3 days or so watching videos and googleing around. while proton is awesome some things will need play on Linux to work. I have tried to follow the instructions on their site however it doesn't seem to be working.

    wget -q "http://deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -O- | sudo apt-key add -
    sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_saucy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install playonlinux

These are the instructions on their site
    here are the systems responces
    wget
    OK
    wget http

    apt update
    the usual

    apt install
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    playonlinux : Depends: wine or
wine-development but it is not going to be installed
Depends: python-wxgtk3.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: cabextract but it is not going to be installed
Depends: mesa-utils but it is not going to be installed
Depends: binutils but it is not going to be installed
Depends: curl but it is not going to be installed
steam-installer : Depends: steam (= 1:1.0.0.54+repack-5ubuntu1) but it is not installable
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

I though apt would install the dependencies? So I must be doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

and the one highlighted in blue is PlayOnLinux, which I haven't installed because I play Steam simulations and games.

As a note in the future to include dependencies you need to use this:
      sudo apt-get install -f package name(s)
The -f tells it to include dependencies.

I am using Kubuntu 18.04, and have the same video card.

If you are using Steam, turn on the beta client in Steam settings as they are now offering "Steam Play" with Proton which is a Wine fork.
As it stands there is 27 windows games supported that work well on Kubuntu and according to another site more that also work but are not officially marked by Valve yet.

Details on Steam Play: https://store.steampowered.com/steamplay this has a link to help you get Mesa 18.3 installed and that is what you need to get at least the officially marked games working.
Alternative site for other games and details on their working status: https://spcr.netlify.com/

Another option to take a look at is Lutris: https://lutris.net/
