e2label: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda1

hi again. I'm back. I'm having a problem running e2label on a pen drive. I'm running
    sudo e2label /dev/sda1 NEW_LABEL

    but I'm getting
e2label: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda1

I've tried Gparted, kde partition manager but I still can't re-label my drive.

It's not critical but i would like to know how to remedy it.

    Thanks

Ok i think i have it sorted. I ran sudo mkfs.vfat -I -n mylabel /dev/sda it appears to have worked.

This works on a clean copy but is there a way of changing the label AFTER I've copied everything to the pen drive. I can change it from a virtualbox windows machine using label E: MyLabel
