    WiFi works, but how?

    Hello

I have a Sony Vaio. I recently installed Kubuntu, and the wireless connection has really given me a headache. I finally got it to work but in a somewhat unorthodox way, and I hope someone can explain to me why it works.

When I run iwconfig just after I've logged in, I get this:

    eth1      unassociated  ESSID:"HusetKreutzfeld"
              Mode:Managed  Frequency=nan kHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
              Bit Rate:0 kb/s   Tx-Power:16 dBm
Retry limit:15   RTS thrff   Fragment thrff
              Power Managementff
              Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:36   Missed beacon:0

Then I run Wireless Assistant and try to connect to my network. The program tells me that it fails to connect to HusetKreutzfeld, but when I run iwconfig afterwards I get this:

    eth1      IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:"HusetKreutzfeld"
              Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.437 GHz  Access Point: 00:17:9A:5B:BA:8F
              Bit Rate:54 Mb/s   Tx-Power:15 dBm
Retry limit:15   RTS thrff   Fragment thrff
              Power Managementff
Link Quality=94/100  Signal level=-34 dBm  Noise level=-35 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:47   Missed beacon:0

    and it all works!

My question is why does this work? And how can I automate it so that I don't have to open the Wireless Assistant every time I log in?

This is what I have installed:

The ip3945 drivers (ip3945, ucode and daemon)
    Kismet

Although, when i try to run kismet from a konsole, I get this:

FATAL:  Could not find user 'your_user_here' for dropping priviledges.  Make sure you have a valid user set for 'suiduser' in your config file.  See the 'Installation & Security' and 'Configuration' sections of the README file for more information.

so I don't think it has anything to do with kismet, but I don't know... maybe it does on some level.

    Thanks for any help!

That is weird. I should only take iwconfig or wireless assistant, not both. You should be able to turn on your wireless at boot with: k-menu>system_settings>network_settings>administrato r_mode>eth1>configure_interface
The iwconfig thing should be able to be run with:
    k-menu>system>kcron
