    Kubuntu 24.04.1 LTS issues

    Hi,

I had been using 24.1 but was having issues installing OpenFoam, found out that it's better supported in 24.04 so I installed that instead. First thing I've noticed is that the graphics of the OS are quite laggy compared to how snappy it felt with 24.1. Is there anything I can do to improve the performance or use the same drivers that 24.1 was using?

    Help is much appreciated.

I assume you mean 24.10? (the code numbers follow a <year>.<month> format)

    For what, exactly?
Maybe the more current kernel better supports your hardware, but we don't know what it is.
If you have an Nvidia graphics cards, you should have the same drivers available, I think. if not, there are sources for more current ones vis a PPA.

Look at this link so you can add more information about your system. https://www.howtogeek.com/devops/the...ion-tool-inxi/ If you are using Nvidia graphics, 24.04 does have Proprietary drivers in the PPA. More information will be needed to determine the fix.

Yes, I meant 24.10. I'm not sure what differences there would have been from 24.10 and 24.04.1. Looking at the below, I know that 24.10 was also using the nouveau driver as well. I could not get any of the propriety drivers to work on 24.10, I don't think the graphics card I'm using is supported anymore.

          That would be the difference.
24.10 seems to have a bit better open-source Nouveau driver, while 24.04 is iirc the last Ubuntu release that has proprietary Nvidia drivers available for this hardware. nvidia dropped support for this 2013-era GPU.

Try using the driver manager to get this in 24.04, if you wish.

24.10 is not a stable release and will not have working Nvidia proprietary drivers. 24.04 is LTS and will have Nvidia proprietary drivers, and that is what will make the machine run smoothly. There is a lot of info online how to install Nvidia proprietary drivers onto Kubuntu 24.04. As claydoh mentioned above.. nvidia dropped support for this 2013-era GPU.... I would try 24.04, if it doesn't work, I would try 22.04. (you are using a open-source Nouveau driver, change it to a Nvidia proprietary driver)

This is not accurate at all.

Non-LTS are stable releases, just shorter lived, in terms of security support.

Nvidia drivers are available on all Ubuntu releases. The case here is that Nvidia stopped supporting old GPUs and don't provide the proprietary drivers that support them any longer - they are not compatible with more current kernels than what is in 24.04.

Just go to the Driver Manager to get the 470 driver in 24.04

(However, it would be nice if the current Nouveau driver could be available in the older kernel, but I imagine this might not be possible.
However, to muddy the water, LTS do get semi-annual kernel bumps, and this might do just that.)

Did not know 24.10 would have stable Nvidia proprietary drivers. Thanks for that information, it adds another key. Question, So as long as DKMS is on, then with any upgrade of this sort it would line the shim to work correctly?
