Samba helped to me to loose my root and user acc password. But logged in for now

    Did something silly.
Was experimenting with Samba to try and connect via lan to a Win7.

What I did not know was that SAMBA can change my root password. I thought Samba ran separately ?!
I also suspect I have an intermittant keyboard problem(on a few keys), that dropped out a charachter twice, to compete the change !!!!!

I am still loggged in now to normal user account, did an emergency back-up of home(including hidden files),
in case I had to go for the nuke option(reinstallation).

Is there a way of resetting from where I am, or do I have to something
    like this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/2400...ative-password
where it uses recovery mode ?

In the meatime I am using on terminal $passwd, and trying all combinations... !!!!

    Thanks

What do you mean by root password? *buntu does not use a root account, by default.
If you mean your sudo password, which is the same as your user password, yes, you will have to follow those instructions on the askubuntu page.
You have go to this so-called "single-user" mode for this is where a root like account is available in order to obtain permission to change it.

I do not see how anything in Samba at all can change anyone's user password. Even if it could, it would require user interaction to do so. The smbpasswd command changes samba specific passwords, but not login ones, as far as I recall.
