How to prevent SDDM from being updated - 18.04 LTS black screen after updates

    Hi all,

Have a HP Elitebook 8730w with Nvidia Quadro 2700 and 240GB SSD using fresh Kubuntu 18.04 LTS installed.

The installation was flawless and able to boot into KDE Plasma beautifully.

Decided to stayed away from proprietary Nvidia driver since nouveau driver is more than enough for my needs.

The problem started soon after a reboot and caused a black screen with no login GUI. Can use Ctrl, Alt and F2 to F6.

    What would cause this?

    Thanks in advance

Sometimes something the user does, or runs, usually as root, causes /home/youraccout/.Xauthority (a hidden file) to change its ownership to root. You can check that by using Dolphin (with hidden files set to show) and if root:root is the owner you can open a Konsole and do "sudo chown youracct:youracct /home/youracct/.Xauthority"

If .Xauthority is owned by you then the problem is something else.

How can I do what you suggested if I cannot login? There is no login GUI. Just a black screen.
Also, it is a fresh install of kubuntu 18.04 LTS. Never made any changes.
      Doesn't make sense??

Do you get the grub menu when you hold the shift key during boot. If so select the Recovery option and log in as root.

You can't even call up the grub menu?

            or

Does the POST show any thing?

IF you cannot call up the grub menu by holding down the left shift key will pressing the power key then the only way you can access your installation is by booting your install USB stick and mounting your sda1 (assuming) partition to /mnt. If you can't do that then perhaps your HD is blown?

I can call up the grub menu and did what you suggested by making sure that .Xauthority isn't own by root.

No. Nothing wrong with my SSD since I tested it on my other two laptops. Flawless and no black screen whatsoever.

Windows 7 works flawlessly with this laptop. Under kubuntu 18.04, black screen and cursor can move around.

Ah, so you ARE getting into your account. If you an move your mouse around the xserver has started. Use Alt+F2 to open a terminal and enter
                startkde
                and press Enter

This is what it is saying using startkde...

DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server

If I use startx it tried to start up and returned to command prompt with error messages.

I played with installing lightdm and GUI login came up but it wouldn't take my password

Just don’t say it gives error megs, tell us what the messages say, exactly. (My crystal ball is broken!)

                    When did you install lightdm?

Stick with ssdm and let’s work it out
