[DESKTOP] Which Kub. to install on new laptop now?

    Hello,
What version of Kub. should I install, knowing that 24.04 will be out in 2-3 months? I don't want any snaps. Do I have to install a regular ISO then de-snap it, or is there a way to install a de-snapped Kub to begin with?

Either 22.04 LTS or 23.10, your choice. Doesn't really much matter which one. I'd go for 23.10, since it will be less of a jump forward overall.

I would install 23.10 and get a sdhc drive (minimum 8 GB but probably 16 GB) from Amazon or newegg because they are cheap now. Download the ISO file & open the app make startup disc (or if using windows, get ISO magic) to make a startup disc on sdhc drive / or if you want burn the Kubuntu 23.10 over to a dvd if you have a burner. You will be able to upgrade to LTS in March. IMAO, you should upgrade to every distribution when they are released...AFTER the first month of release. If you run an LTS beyone a couple distro's you may have problems doing upgrades to get caught up. Just an fyi.

Thanks for telling me (indirectly) what an hdhc is. But my laptop doesn't have a slot for that. What's wrong with using a flash drive for installatiion?

Also, why can't I change the second drop-dowen menu's entry to something other than Solved now?

The next question is, should I de-Snap 23.10 before upgrading to 24.04 (when it's available) or after the upgrade?

Flash drives are fine, usually the micro drives have adapters, some are like flash/usb drives. IDK about the Solved issue. I do not DE-Snap anything...that is a personal choice. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on why I should do so. Personally I will not be going to 24.04 until about June 1. Right now I am working with SDHC drives as back up copies of current working computers in case I screw up one of my current systems. Say you have a 128GB internal 23.10 drive, I use a 128GB flash/SDHC drive and clone it with Clonezilla. More on this later... TTFN

See my post today on this thread: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/forum/...apping-kubuntu

I will do this again once 24.04 is out if you want to wait a bit and let me test it first. Of course, one always needs to backup important data before doing dist-upgrades regardless of the setting.

Any number of reasons to not use snap are outlined all over the internet. Not the least of which is a security vector that has already caused a few problems. Most of the initial complaining had to do with the incredible number of loop devices needed to run only a couple snaps. Easy enough for you to search and read up on yourself.

As you said - it's a personal choice. That's what Linux is all about IMO.

This forum thread on this topic offers some opinions on the matter: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/forum/...ly-so-terrible

Having read a few posts about this, I believe I'll wait until the first point release to install 24.04. In the mean time, I definitely plan to de-snap 23.10 (after solving some niggling Firefox annoyances).
I've downloaded the installation file; it's a -.tar.bz2 file. I want to install it, not archive it. How do I do that?

Either follow the instructions on the Mozilla.org website step by step or ditch the downloaded file and use this Script to install traditional Firefox instead (choose option [1] when running the script, this will download and install the .tar.bz2 file from Mozilla.org for you - please do not use the option for the Mozilla Team PPA anymore).

Schwarzer Kater, honest to god, you are an unbelievable godsend. Just followed your (shortest, simplest) instructions and now have traditional Fx installed. That's incredible. Now to sync, if possible t snapped one to the traditional one, and I'll be off and running. A million thanks.

Another question: should I upgrade 22.04 (stepwise) before such modifications, after them, or it doesn't make any difference?

I've run into a glitch in repeating this process on my new laptop. I put / on one partition and /home, labeled Data, in another partition. I can't cd into Downloads no matter what command configuration I use (/home, /home/Downloads, /lyn/home/Downloads, /lyn/Downloads, etc.). How do I get the Konsole into Downloads so I can execute your command string?
