Kwin constantly crashing, how can I solve it?

I am dreadfully sorry to open my second topic in a matter of hours, but I'm stuck with my machine almost constantly popped up with messages of Kwin crashes, and it also slows the system quite a bit. What is Kwin, how can I solve it, and also are there any alternatives to it?

    Thank you.

KWin is an essential part of the KDE Plasma desktop environment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KWin
It is an X11 window manager / Wayland compositor.

Which Kubuntu version do you use (which KDE Plasma version)?
Do you additionally use the Kubuntu Backports?
Do you use an X11 or Wayland session?

What do you do when KWin crashes? Is it reproducable?
    Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X
Desktop: Lenovo ThinkCentre M75s • Laptop: Apple MacBook Pro 13" • and others

get rid of Snap script (20.04 +)reinstall Snap for release-upgrade script (20.04 +)
install traditional Firefox script (22.04 +) • install traditional Thunderbird script (24.04)

      1) 5.27.4
      2) I don't think i do, no.
      3) x11.

Mostly when i move a window, nothing radical or demanding.

So I assume Kubuntu 23.04 (due to Plasma 5.27.4)…
        1. Create a new user account, log into this account and see if it still happens.
        2. If it doesn't:
Log out and at the log-in screen press [Ctrl] [Alt] [F4] to get to a tty.
Log in with your old user account.
Enter cd ; sudo rm -r .cache/* (exactly as written here)
          Enter exit
Press [Ctrl] [Alt] [F1] to get back to the graphical log-in.
Log in with your old user and test if the problem still occurs.
If it still does, the culprit could possibly be found in your ("invisible") settings within your user's /home, possibly the KWin settings.

-> It is also quite likely that a theme that you installed is not compatible with your Plasma version and makes KWin crash…

Another possiblility (if the above does not help to narrow down the problem) could be to enable the Kubuntu Backports to get more recent Plasma, Frameworks and Gear versions that might include some bug fixes for your problem, see:

Okay, so you are using X11 when you login. You don't believe you have activated Kubuntu Backports.

What version of Kubuntu are you running?

To save time, open a konsole and type:

          inxi -F

Copy the full output and paste it between quote tags.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

This is a new install of Kubuntu 23.04?

Have you updated since installing Kubuntu 23.04, and if 'Yes', how did you do it? With Discover, or from the CLI (command line)?

Do these offer any further info or details?

Actually, looking at your other topic, I am going to heavily suspect Latte Dock related issues, though this seems extreme.

Latte Dock is dead, unmaintained, and can be very buggy, even if building from the latest ource code.
It is buggy in general, and has been getting worse as bitrot is setting in.

Are there any other plugins that I can use that would give the same results as Latte?

I've installed the latest version just yesterday, i don't think there has been any updates that i should've been aware of ever since.

I am using Latte Dock in Debian 12, Kubuntu 22.04 and openSUSE Tumbleweed (X11, X11, X11)- and only in Kubuntu 22.04 I have some graphical glitches (and only when Latte Dock starts, afterwards they are gone), otherwise everthing is working without any problems (one dock, two panels, eyecandy enabled everywhere ).
Only in Wayland I had lots of problems with Latte Dock.

There are still people working on Latte Dock, e.g. the version in openSUSE Tumbleweed is newer and includes more patches than the version in Kubuntu 23.04.
A KDE developer (I can't remember who, could have been Nate…) said that they will have an eye on Latte Dock, so that it will keep working as long as possible.
I have been using Latte Dock for years (even with Nvidia ) and it did not once crash KWin

-> I still do suspect that the culprit are the numerous themes that the OP probably installed without checking if they were really meant to work with Plasma 5.27.x in Kubuntu 23.04
Did KWin already crash before you installed any third-party themes?

What happened in another user account?

PS: Also proprietary Nvidia drivers can be responsible for KWin crashes - these I had…

What results are you looking for? Some things can be done with stock panels these days

There really is Nothing that isn't just as old, or older.
There are other old docks that may work still, but who knows. They also won't integrate into Plasma much .

Plank and Cairo Dock iirc are even older, but still around, though also lacking recent development.

I will try again with a new account. As for the 3rd party themes, unfortunately it crashes even with the basic theme. I do use Nvidia though, should i upgrade?

No there isn't. It was long abandoned by it's dev. Only updates have been automatic translation updates. If Suse is patching it, they are not up streaming their changes. I imagine they patch to aid in building it, without looking, unless they are just pulling the translation changes from kde's GitHub.

Building from.source, as I had been doing for a very long time, started to break for me in both x11 and Wayland, with Intel and AMD graphics, around plasma 5.26, on multiple systems. Well, the 2 that I used. The main bug was panels/docks always on top, covering windows.

I still check it, just in case.

                              Do this first (new account).

Then you could boot from a live Kubuntu 23.04 USB and use it for a while - if KWin does not crash then, this could mean that one of the third-party themes has modified your system in a way that lets it crash even when you use the default themes.

Nvidia: which driver did you install? The -open version or the "regular" one? I ask, because recently I had a system here for maintenance that crashed with the -open one and worked fine with the "regular" one.
You should be able to see this in Konsole with ubuntu-drivers list .
And what did you mean by "should i upgrade?"?
