Either HP or the specific chip's manufacturer needs to provide data or code, or much more likely some firmware, else the community needs to hack on it to develop support.
It is coming, but who knows how soon it wall make it to a more universally useful state.

Does this mean that we can only use the notebook with headphones or have to install Windows until this issue is fixed? OMG

So even with Wine or a VM it won't work right?

The Fedora 38 KDE Spin live ISO does definitely not contain the 6.3.x kernel, neither does the Garuda KDE ISO yet AFAIK (they both contain the 6.2.x kernel and you would have to install them first and update them afterwards which would then install the 6.3.x kernel).


For live testing purposes try the openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE live ISO which does contain the 6.3.x. kernel (edit: 6.4.x kernel now):

The TUXEDO OS 2 ISO (which is in some way Kubuntu's sibling) might also work with your hardware - it contains their own 6.2.x kernel, but Tuxedo sells their own Linux-compatible hardware too, which might already need specific patches that they might have backported into their kernel… You will have to try and see:

If one or both of them work you can decide what to do from there with this knowledge - if neither of them does I would contact the HP support with your problem…

Thank you. For openSUSE Tumbleweed there was no option for starting the desktop environment with the previous downloaded file, because it just started the installation menu. But this one it should work and TUXEDO OS 2 is definitely worth a try as well. HP only supports Windows 11 for this notebook, but we'll see what the support says.

I see this sort of thing with people working on support for various Chromebooks. New hardware configs and hwdb files may need to be created for your hardware, on top of other things.

Can you post a screenshot of what you see for this audio device in system settings, including any drop-down stuff for the speakers?

A possible thing to check might be via alsamixer, A terminal gui for audio hardware run from the command line. I have seen devices be muted there, though it has been a while since I have seen anyone with this happen. A long shot but an easy thing to check.

Alsamixer needs to be installed. Open Konsole and type:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install alsamixergui

Once it's installed you can click on a blank area of your Desktop and type alsam which will find Application Alsamixergui Graphical audio mixer. You can down arrow and press Enter or double-click on the shown entry to launch the application.

I also have an HP Envy x360, and sound is fine on mine. I'm presently running 22.04.2. When you go into Setting -> System Settings -> Audio, is there a button labelled Inactive Devices? (We may be running different versions of Kubuntu). If so, then you may want to see if your speakers could be activated that way. It's been a while since I've used my the on-board B&O. I use the headphone output jack with a plug to my desktop Bose Companion speakers, however just pulling the plug activates the B&O speakers.

My audio worked perfectly under 22.04.01 and, I believe, on 22.04.02 until very recent updates (7/15/23 -- alsa updated, 7/21/23 -- nothing obvious, but that's when problem was discovered). I have been running kubuntu on this setup for a few months (and on other computers for years) with no problem. Only the recent update trashed audio, so wiping the computer to change OSs is not a viable solution for me. Any suggestion on how to rollback the sound-related updates?

INTERIM SOLUTION found. on ubuntu wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/So...otingProcedure I did the first two commands on the troubleshooter: a. stop pulseaudio and delete my local config files, b. restart pulseaudio.
The sound config dialog still thinks my output is "Family 17h" which I haven't seen before, and my Radeon High Definition Audio Controller is off, but sound works quite well enough for zoom. Glad I won't have to reboot to Windows.
