    Success! gdisk did the trick!
You guys (and Mr Rod Smith) rock!

All partitions checked for alignment (don't tell the Lenovo guys I voided the warranty by installing an SSD), 3,5GB available... and a lesson learned! always check your BIOS settings before installing

Thanks so much for your help

It probably wasn't worth the effort for a few MB of RAM, but I'm glad I went for it if only to learn about this stuff. The acquired knowledge might save me a few headaches in the future

And so you not only got the GPT going, but your Kubuntu boots by UEFI? Boot Repair did it (after you got the GPT)?

In any case, way to go there, dazz .. You've become something of an expert at something you'd probably rather not have had the opportunity to become at. (Pardon my grammar.)

That's all correct. An extra Boot repair was necessary after converting the partition table to GPT. I'll try to summarize the process in my next post in case it helps someone with a similar problem

Far, far, FAR from an expert, LOL, but thanks for the kind words.
