    Welcome to KFN!!

I hadn't gotten around to installing Steam yet on my new laptop, so I just did it now to make sure nothing's changed. My first question is, why are you running it from a command line?

Okay, let's start at the beginning! Using your favorite package manager--mine is Synaptic, but you may be used to Discover or something else--install Steam. Make sure that these packages get installed:

    steam-installer
    steam-devices
    steam:i386

Now you should find Steam in your 'games' menu, i.e., Main Menu | Games | Steam. Click it and report back with your results. It runs great for me!

I had the problem that you have ... Steam running by but dying before the login GUI appeared.
I purged all the Steam files, including config files, which I found by running "sudo updatedb, sudo locate steam", then I installed the files that DYK listed in her post.

BTW, if you attempt to run updatedb or locate and your system can't find them then run "sudo apt update, sudo apt install mlocate".
