First, to Snowhog, please ignore my messaged plea for help, I found the answer as soon as I went Home> Help the newbie.
My question, what is the subscribe/unsubscribe button getting me into/out of? (As you can guess, I don't do a lot with forums).

I think Subscribe will have you receive notifications for any new posts in the thread (I also think you own threads and one you've posted in are automatically subscribed), Unsubscribe will have you stop receiving them.
