ati display on laptop (no 3D stuff)

I'm trying to set up kubuntu on a compaq r4000 laptop. It's an AMD 64 CPU with the ati mobility X2000 graphics.

I can't get 3D stuff (glxgears) working, although everything else works fine. After a lot of reading and tweaking, I've narrowed it down to this line, from the xorg.log file:

(EE) fglrx(0): Fail to initialize ASIC in kernel.

I haven't a clue what this means or how to fix it. Any suggestions?

I've set the onboard video to UMA (shared memory) only, doesn't make much difference from UMA+sideport (shared and onboard) or sideport (onboard video memory). I've got the fglrx driver installed, but so far, no 3D stuff :/
Working...
