Okay, years ago I did something like this and made it work. IE, I could set this up on my local machine, ssh into my home server, and have secure SSL surfing while roaming out and about for all non-ssl browser connections. (ie, all http rather than https sites) I tried setting this up again recently for my laptop using the command they suggested (ssh -D 5222 myuser@mymachine.tld -N), along with the appropriate configurations, and it won't work. So I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not. Basically all I need is to be able to surf securely on sites that don't have their own SSL configuration (I have a couple I manage that are this way) when I'm out at a local cafe, the library, etc. I'm not understanding what I did wrong. I followed their directions, set the proxy as localhost, port 5222, in the browser and away I went. However, nothing would load or port forward.
Option two, if I can't get this working, is to use a public SSL proxy server. If someone knows of a trustworthy one, I could go that route. Sure, I could get the SSL installed on the sites I manage, but then there's other sites, webmails, etc that I don't have that ability on, so I'm looking for a general all around way to do secure browsing while roaming. On my home network that's not an issue. But out at Bud's Cafe or wherever I land, that's a different story. Anyhow, any tips would be welcome.
