    can't launch vlc from dolphin

I recently loaded KUbuntu 16.04.1 on a desktop system, and just installed vlc from the software center. VLC runs great from the command line but when I try to launch it on a video file from the dolphin file manager I get:

    KDEInit could not launch 'ksystraycmd':
    Could not open library '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkdeinit5_ksystraycmd'.
Cannot load library /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkdeinit5_ksystraycmd: (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkdeinit5_ksystraycmd.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

I am not sure what ksystraycmd does but it doesn't appear to be loaded on my system.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

In Dolphin, right-click on a video file, select "Properties" at the bottom, then "File Type Options." What's at the top of "Application Preference Order?"

It said Dragon player followed by vlc. I changed the order to vlc then dragon video player but no differences. Oddly other videos I have found start from dolphin just fine. If it makes a difference the video in question is and mp4 with ".mp4" file suffix. Thanks for the response. Sorry for not responding sooner I have been out of town for the holidays.

AFAIK, libkdeinit5_ksystraycmd.so doesn't exist in Plasma 5. Is this an upgrade to 16.04 or new install? Did you use a previous home folder?

The library in question is to put the icon in the old QT4 systray but plasma 5/QT5 uses a different method. Seems you might have a left-over setting or something.

It was a fresh install. I let the install create a home folder but then copied over stuff from a backup. The backup was from a debian (8 I think) system. It is possible I overwrote something that broke this. Thanks for the responses.

Simple test: Boot up, don't log into the GUI, alt-F1 and log into the console, back out of your home folder, rename your home folder, alt-F7 and log into the GUI, test VLC.

If all works like it's supposed to you know it's in your home somewhere. If not, the problem lies elsewhere. You can get back to your original home by logging out of the GUI and alt-F1 again and rename the folders to restore the original. There are VLC folders in ~/.cache ~/.config and ~/.local/share Likely just deleting those might fix it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think you are right. I will try that when I can. (Sorry for not responding sooner, recovering from surgery.)
