Going insane trying to install

The following flavors of linux all fail after installation on my new machine. The livecd works fine

Linux should run great on this and very fast. Win7 takes 21 seconds to boot and runs very fast

I have no idea why these all fail

Some, like backbox 4.4 will just sit at a blank screen and not even get to the livecd. BHS will install, then fail on grub installation. Kali appears to fully install but goes into full panic mode upon boot and dumps me to a rescue prompt. Parrot installed fine, but failed upon boot. I am trying to install them to logical drives sda 5,6,7. If itt would help I could delete the logical drives and install 2 ofd them on primary partitions on the ssd. Can't go to GPT partition table without total reinstall of windows. It does complain a lot about usb devices before it gives up. I have a kb, mouse, wieless, a bluetooth adaptor, and an externmal backup (turned off right now) connected to usb.

I have the same Mobo / processor combo but since I don't duel-boot, so not sure I could be of much help. I have not had any problems with installing Linux to a drive. In your case, and in general, during installs, having peripheral USB devices plugged in is not desirable. Although the only ancillary thing you have plugged in at the moment is the bluetooth. Still, I'd leave it unplugged. Also, why do you have 3 such large physical drives in your box AND a large external USB hard drive? Clearly, if the installs all are failing, it must have to do with the drive selection during install, as you suspect.

Was able to install ubuntu 14.04 net. Had to boot with recovery mode and install a desktop (kubuntu). Now trying to get a decent display resolution. Stuck with 800x600 right now. I did notice I get a blank screen with ctrl-alt-F1. Trying

sudo -i
apt-get update && apr-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade

nothing updated

Allowing Kubuntu to upgrade to 16.04

The large drives are for storing pictures (mostly of kids going back to 2000), videos, and other files i don't want to lose. The external is the same except I can also use it to copy the files to other computers. That way I don't have to use ftp or anything else that would require the computer be left in any particular state.

Boot fails on reboot. More directly after selecting Ubuntu from grub. Boots to windows 7 (don't like 8 or 10) ok

This is really puzzling

You have a typo in your command line: apr-get instead of apt-get. Don't know if that makes a difference.

that command will NOT take you to 16.04 and yes their is a typo in it that will stop it from even doing the upgrade.

this is a common misconception ,,,,,,,that "dist-upgrade" will take you to the next version of Kubuntu ,,,,it dose not .

I managed to solve the problem in the strangest way. The DVI to HDMI cable was too short to move computer where I wanted it. Replaced with a longer cable in better shape and now everything works fine. I still see the errors but the desktops work

Could it be a problem with the iommu setting? Or if you are using installers on USB - try with DVD! Not quite as stupid as it sounds, at least not for AMD on Gigabyte motherboards. Don't know about yours.
