I enabled Incoming to allow. After that the Windows machine gives me the share name when I do "net view \\sc59" it lists it by name PENNYBEAR as a Disk share. But it won't let me browse to it to see the contents of the folder. I must have something configured wrong on the Linux side.

edit: I noticed in samba config (the GUI version of samba) it had the wrong path to the shared folder, fixed that. Going downstairs to try again.

      THAT DID IT!

I do believe the firewall thing was the last obstacle, after doing all of the other things you guys suggested, plus fixing that path parameter in the GUI samba config.

Step by step, one foot in front of the other, eventually a guy can go the whole mile.

I can now see the contents of the shared folder PENNYBEAR from the Windows computer in the basement. All I have left to do is try copying and/or writing files to it / from it from the basement machine. The machine in the basement is wireless, so I rely on a shared folder to "transporter beam" music projects back and forth. The machine in the basement is kinda stripped down and is dedicated to doing nothing but music and multi-track recording. So it's software and internet capabilities are somewhat limited.

THANKS for all the help everyone!

Have to revisit this thread. Between Dec 1 2016 and now I have tried to get AVLinux working on my basement music studio computer. I set it up as dual boot, but the experiment failed, and I found out the AVLinux guy didn't bother to tell anyone that he quit developing or supporting AVLinux.

In order to correct some issues on the music studio machine I had to install Windows 7 service pack and re-flash the bios. Now it has reverted back to not seeing my upstairs office Linux Mint machine. So I'm basically starting over with sharing a folder from Mint to Win 7. Reading this thread again it appears I had success the first time around. So I'll rehash these tips and steps and see what happens.

You know, you might be able to see what packages are in (and not in) AVLinux and roll-your-own version of it. Seems like it couldn't be too hard. It's not like the AVLinux guy was writing all the software...

this is absolutely true,,,,,,,,,,,AVlinux,Ubuntu studio, ect, ect,,,,,,,,,are just Debian based(in AVlinux's case) or Ubuntu based distros with a bunch of audio/video applications included by default and a low latency kernel .

you could ,,,,,,,,,, on whatever ver. of Kubuntu or whatever you are running ,,,,,,add a low latency kernel and whatever applications you require and have a better system than the preconfigured one ,,,,as you would not have all the extra software you do not need.

So for giggles, I installed AVlinux in Vbox, converted the VDI drive to an image file, mounted the image, and now I have a list of all packages installed and access to the sources list.
