Updates / Leave Well Enough Alone

I feel confident my recent audio issue was the result of an update. No evidence other than time - coincident. Software, security, other updates by the zillions. Seem to run in batches to me; perhaps days in a row, nothing, etc. Now that my audio is good to go (update/upgrade terminal deal) I would like to pick and choose future updates. I reckon let security updates run wild. Is there a way to interpret the updates as the preview shows prior to accepting them? Thanks.

    Do you mean:
    Code:
    apt list - - upgradable
In practice, it's not much help. Sometimes updates troubles can be a timing problem, due to a repository being in the middle of a change when you update from it. I don't know if APT has any provision to avoid getting half-baked updates; I imagine repositories being on a versioning file system, so that it could guarantee consistent sets of updates. Perhaps with btrfs snapshots...

I would let the system do what it wants, your problem was just a glitch imo, maybe just a little skip in the Internet connection, or like jlittle said, a repository issue. Updates come in almost daily, so if you miss a few days of using Kubuntu they will build up. I think that is what you were asking, that there were so many coming in? I see this as a non-issue for now, so go have some fun with something else IMO.

The number of updates was extraneous info. What I was concerned with was the time - coincidence of another batch of new updates, perhaps one or more being audio related, that could have been the source of my sudden audio problem.

I have this also, it's no big deal, especially if your updating was not working properly before. In your other post I talked about Updates a little and had a post here that I lost yesterday. Run the command again and see what it says, pay attention, Copy Paste to a Document for review if you want.

Just a glitch I think, it happens with Windows and Linux.

I wonder if you checked you iso Hash when you downloaded Kubuntu? If you get a bad download it will cause lots of issues with your system. You can still check it if it is lying around.

What is iso Hash? Something Turkish? I tried forever and a day to install it via usb. Would never work. I resorted to disk and it worked. No idea where that disk went. I'll just continue to keep my fingers crossed. I am now "reading the updates; if I see one audio-related I may take a pass on it. I think paranoia is the ultimate survival tool.

              https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

I said Hash, but it is also referred to as "SUM" like in the article above. MD5 SUM, SHA256sum, SHA512 etc. To get the right SUM run this in the Terminal so we get the distribution right, put it in next post.
              Code:
              lsb_release -a
Most important is if you have the iso File that was used to create the DVD? If you still have that then we can check it to see if the files were downloaded without issue. If that is still on Windows we can check it with a Windows tool, or even from Kubuntu side we can check it.

Or, the DVD can be checked, which might be the easiest. Which ever one you would like to pursue we will do, personally I would do the iso check, or both. I might be a little paranoid but had a big problem with this once, while using a bad internet connection. Chased problems for weeks and wasted others time, which is the worst part really.

I don't understand Kubuntu yet but I think you need to learn more about Updating it. I get Updates almost daily, so you should be checking this almost daily. In Mint there is an Update Icon in the Panel, so always know when they are there.

I should have installed it tonight, but put Mint Mate on instead. After reading up on it, the Documentation is very good, much better than Mint! never knew it was so good that way.

No, don't pass on Updates, noobs like us should accept all that come in. Again, the problem you had was probably just a glitch. Let's make sure you got a good iso download.

I get updates near on average 3-4 times weekly.

                  Code:
                  richard@richard-HP-15-Notebook-PC:~$ lsb_release -a
                  No LSB modules are available.

Okay, here is the Hash SUM you need, but you did not mention if you still have the iso, so this might have been a waste of time? Tell me what you have, iso or the dvd? This is the first thing we should do when downloading an iso, especially a big one like an operating system. I'll be back later if you need help, unless someone else will come along.

I started another Post because not getting full functions here, can't Bold, separate Paragraphs or add Code. I see that you have this: "No LSB modules are available." If it were me would install this: sudo apt-get install lsb-core And I wonder if this was the problem you were having with the USB's?

What is lsb-core? That's a whole bunch of stuff. Please note I followed that command with the previous command: lsb_ -a

It's just a Support Package that gives you a bunch of tools you might need.

Do you want to Hash at that iso?

                            I don't know. What's that mean?

Nothing to worry about, just some tools you might use in the future. Now that they are installed just leave them. One of them that I've found useful is "Alien" which converts RPM Packages to .deb files. I don't want to get off topic here so if you still need help with Updating or checking if your distro download went well let's move on.
