Audio is Driving Me Mad

Is it possible that it's a hardware issue? I mean...I've never had an issue with audio on any PC (mine, client's, relatives, etc.). Not saying it is, and very likely isn't, but might be worth a look? For comparison's sake, you could buy a cheap PCI add-in sound card (you can find on eBay for $5) and do a comparison.

Opps, yes forgot about that. Are you using/testing with the newest version of Mate-17.3, seems your hardware is pretty new, that might help. Otherwise I got nothing, will keep looking though when I have time. I just don't see any good answers doing searches using your hardware. There were some but not exactly the same as yours and the fixes were complicated. If it were me - and couldn't find an answer - would try more distro's to see if any fix the problem. I read some reviews of this pc, and they weren't good for the most part, so perhaps the soundcard is not well supported by linux.

Get Timeshift installed if you want to make some changes that we can't reverse. It's simple and uses your Home Partition to store the images on. They will be pretty small for the average user, I think mine are 3-4GB. The first will/may be bigger if I remember right.

Again, I will keep up with you but my skills are not all that good.

Yeah I looked at that. Maybe another update will fix it. The Mint 17.3 I used was via VirtualBox. I guess it brought its own drivers or whatever caused alsamixer to no longer show HDMI. I'm gonna load the same Mint to USB and see what happens. Mint seems pretty nice to me. Thanks for all your help. If you run across anything, post it here and we'll give it a whirl. Thanks again. I'm kind of computered out at the moment.

I see lot's of problems with this Card on the net, that doesn't mean it won't work, just that I can't fix it lol.

Stick with the USB IMO, your hardware really an't up to the task of VM's, IMO. Less space and wear on your drives also, they need to be Updated and ran like a Full OS to be fully functional.

I did a search on Ubuntu Certified HP computers and it did not come up. This again don't mean it won't work, just that I can't fix it. You can try a few things if you get Timeshift installed. You can save the image to another device if you like but it will need to be ext filesystem, best to use ext4. I suggest to use timeshift and try some stuff. If that don't work try a few other forums if needed, then a different distro, maybe even an older one, you never know what will work.

logan, do you have a way of checking if there are "Broken Packages" in Kubuntu? In Mint we have Synaptic Package Manager, I'm sure there is a way of doing this with Terminal. It probably is not an answer but worth a try. If needed you can just install it and take a look at it.

Install the Synaptic Package Manager, either through the Software Center or by running this command in the Terminal:

sudo apt-get install synaptic.

Also, do you have this installed in "Software Manager" alsa-utils? I'm guessing it is but worth a check.

Wouldn't hurt to run in Terminal:

 sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Reboot and try sound. Sometimes this fixes things.

I'll do that in near future. Check this out. I now have Mint 17.03 Cinnamon loaded from my usb. Ran alsamixer and it shows the HDMI. I just played 4 youtube music videos. Remember Mint via VirtualBox yesterday showed no HDMI but the audio still sucked. Quality was as good as Windows and no flaws. WTH?

Well, sounds like you are making some headway! good. I don't know VirtualBox very well, but sometimes there are issues there also. Takes even more knowledge and adds more variables. For me it would be easier to just use the LinuxLiveSession via USB. The guys here don't seem to like Unetbootin, and I agree, there are some issues, and that's why I use mostly UUI. I've also used Unetbootin many times with no problems, but it all depends on what your doing with it.

You might do this with Kubuntu also to see if any issues, who knows, maybe Mint will play better with that soundcard, or a setting of some kind got changed when you were mucking about in Kubuntu, we'll probably never know.

I agree, and a reinstall might fix it all. Did you Update with the Terminal yet? I always do the easy stuff first.
