I tried all the solutions in this post without success. There was mention of an application 'kontakt', notice the spelling. If you have read the solution, other than attempting my naive understanding of the instructions, can you see anything I probably would not have understood. Pretty cryptic, but I thought it easier for you to use the link to get to the recommended site than me copying it here.
When I reopened the distribution, some additional functions do not work. When I select the Bookmarks tab in Firefox Browser, the normal drop-down does not appear. Kmail does not open at all, and Kontact does not even appear in the applications menu. There are probably other irregularities, but I haven't used this distribution of Kubuntu (K14.04LTS) very long since my effort to get Akonadi and MySQL to function again. Thanks for the effort! Shab BTW, my reason for re-installing were due to an accidental mistake on my part. I wasn't trying to play with the program, I was just continuing the search for answers after Don left the other day.
In my search, resetting the CMOS was suggested which enable an accident to take place and my stupidity to overtake. Since my explanation was unsuccessful and too wordy when I posted the problem with no response at all, I decided to reinstall. It didn't seem possible anyone else would make the same mistake, so I could see no benefit for anyone but me to go through the repair process. Probably another mistake. K16 doesn't work much better than K15.10, so the lower image that was mistakenly included in this post related to a failed attempt in the reinstall of K16.
I have started saving for my new computer. I will replace everything, because whatever is wrong, if it is hardware is seemingly undiscoverable. I have spent more than 1000 hours (at least 4 to 5 hours a day for 2 years) trying to make this build stable; that's long enough, even though I will continuing the process until I can purchase new components.
I am not really sure if solving this problem in K14.04 is worth the trouble. The system is already working poorly since failure to fix the Akonadi/MySQL problem. Lots of slowdown to the distribution. After I installed, this last time, Kubuntu 14.04 LTS 64bit was very fast and responsive, but would not allow email to function. I don't understand Akonadi very well, but I suspect its lack of function would continually slow the system down as use progressed. My understanding is that Akonadi controls how memory is used in the entire system.
I looked at the system processes to see what I might shut down relating to Kontact as was instructed in your recommended link for repair. I don't know any packages that may be affected by Kontact or Akonadi by name, so I did not shut down any working processes. Probably another mistake on my part, but I can't do what I don't yet understand. Thanks for not giving up on me, my friend. Shab Since what is happening is probably hardware related, I will probably continue to be a burden to the forum until the new build is made. I am sorry, but I can not quit trying.

My suggestion is to plow the ground and do a fresh install using a newly downloaded ISO that you've confirmed is valid sum check and a valid sum check on the installation medium you choose. Don't make the install complicated or fancy. Give Kubuntu the entire drive with the default format. Then do a default install including restricted software but don't do updates until after the install and reboot. Then add your software FROM THE REPOSITORY, not from outside sources. If your display flickers or has problems open Display in System Settings, select the Compositor, and change it from GL to Xrender.
IF you are still having stability problems download and do the same thing with another distro, like PCLinuxOS or openSUSE. If you still have problems then its hardware. If not then it is Kubuntu. If it is Kubuntu revert to 14.04 until its EOL.Last edited by GreyGeek; Apr 27, 2016, 09:01 AM."A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”

Mic you are still having stability problems download and do the same thing with another distro, like PCLinuxOS or openSUSE. If you still have problems then its hardware. If not then it is Kubuntu. If it is Kubuntu revert to 14.04 until its EOL.
