    Forgot my system login Passwd

Have just installed kubuntu 16.04. On initial boot up, it remembers my pass, & can use the system -until I do something that needs a passwd. Then it won't accept the same pass as before. How can I rectify this?

Holding the Shift key down during boot up has no effect.
I am using Gigabyte hardware/software (GA-F2A88X-D3H), which may be interfering. On first boot, my normal boot password starts the system. After that it doesn't work. So I can't get into Root.
      What should I try next?

The shift key will work. Using it is a timing issue. Too soon or too late and the grub menu will not appear.

I've tried over 35 times this morning and the Shift key still will not work!
There has to be another way!

Why not just log in to recovery mode (single user -- root)? You'll be at the command line and can then have root change the users password.

I can't log into recovery mode because it does not show on bootup - non of the usual bootup items appear.

Reboot and start pressing the esc key. That should end up displaying the Grub Menu.

WHEN you get the Grub Menu to display, you press the down arrow once and press Enter. On the screen displayed, there will be an entry (entries if you have more than one kernel installed) that end in (recovery). Those entries, when you log in, put you at the root command line shell. From there you should be able to change your normal user account password.
