    Firefox "suggested sites" turn off

    I'm sure that the experienced folks know this but....well....I didn't. lol

    When one opens a "new tab" one gets some sites like Kubuntu, or Firefox or whatever in the displayed panels.

    I just kinda assumed......that's what I get for ASSuming! lol..... that they were provided because of the underlying distro etc.

    Well......noooo.....lol...............

    I am POSITIVE that FF and Mozilla are doing this a) to get some much needed revenue and also b) as a service..

    which is fine...............there is no such thing as a free lunch which I first heard enunciated by Barry Commoner when I attended one of his guest lectures.

    Anyhow...... if when one is IN the add a new tab page and one sees a bunch of things like that go to the "gear" and click it and where it says "show your top sites" there is a box below it for "include suggested sites"....ummm untick it....

    and omgolly watch all those suggested sites disappear before your eyes....

    Gotta say that FF and Mozilla actually DO a good job in terms of allowing one to opt in or out as opposed to the all seeing ( and accounting specialist ) Microsith! lol

    It came out some time ago. At least you can turn it off.

      Thanks for the linky, I probably read it but since I nap a lot then quickly forgot it! lol

      However, NOW I can understand, looking back on jposts on OMGUbuntu etc. why the big long threads about "snooping".

      The core difference between sponsored and suggested tiles is that the latter are suggestions based on your interests and not paid for by sponsors.
      DOUBLE DOUBLE OMG!!! for some stupid reason I hit copy button instead of paste up there and OMG DOUBLE.......

      I AM NOT SYNCING FIREFOX across any machines....not, not, not...

      BUT a "paste" that I made in FACEBOOK .........on my ANDROID PHONE..... which "syncs" through KDE connect appeared up there in the quote bubble!!!!!!!!! WHAT!!!!


      BUT to return to the comment, the only way that FF "knows my preferences" is by keeping track of sites that I visit.

      But to return to the OMG...... THAT IS of "some concern".... a copy and paste function in ANOTHER app, on the samsung phone is synced through KDE connect .....to this computer on FIREFOX!! ?

      Now, as the old argument goes, I'm not doing "anything wrong" so whats the problem......

      What if I copied and pasted say.... a password, which I would NOT do....but... hmmmm

      OK TO REPEAT......

      On my phone I typed blah blah in Facebook and posted it.

      I didn't like a picture that I had attached in Facebook so I COPIED the blah blah and then deleted the Facebook post.

      I then PASTED the text into another Facebook post, on the phone and inserted the wanted picture.

      That was.... several hours ago.

      Here at the forum,on my COMPUTER , that syncs with KDE connect, I copied the sentence from the Mozilla article and...

      I mean I dragged it and copied it....

      For some reason hit the "copy" button in the quote bubble that I had premade here at the Forum and it pasted the copy and paste from Facebook on the phone en toto.

      AS A CHECK....I went outside the quote box and on the cursor hit COPY and it PASTED the quote again.

      HMMM I'm going to "test" this tomorrow.

        Ok got this nailed down.

        It is middle of the night here and I thought I was hitting that squeensy little button labled "copy" on the right click and I was actually hitting "paste".

        I just tested it and again, the latest thing appeared as a paste here only now from a wordprocessor on the phone.

        But, figured it out....

        There is a full panoply of functions in KDEconnect and one gets a better "view" of them on the computer, and the second one from the top is.."Clipboard - share the clipboard between devices" which can be toggled off or on....

        so a waste of phosphors except that maybe some other people were not aware of the function.

        I tend to think very literally and deliberatively, I am sure that I SAW the function, but somehow maybe thought in my pea sized brain, "Ok if I......."purposly" copy something into clipboard it will go to the computer...

        nope, as with all functions of KDEconnect ....."it just happens" and instantaneously! lol

          You can always add an extension such as New Tab Redirect or similar and make new tabs whatever you wish like Google Search, your home page, etc.

            Ready for a real surprise? If you have a Gmail account go to your system settings there and follow the link to "Passwords". There you will find a list of websites and the login name and password the stretch back through all the browsers and ISPs you've used, even before you started using gmail or Chromium !!!

            Keys to the kingdom indeed. Worried about privacy? The NSA probably has all that and more. Google has only the last ten years. NSA's info probably goes back 20 years or more.

            Quite te frankly I was surprised to see the depth of that password list but I'm glad it's there, since I had forgotten some of them.

              Logan01 : did you mean within KDEconnect on the Android phone? I do not find such.

              GG, Do you mean IN GMAIL.... Preferences/Security/Saved Logins?

                I thought you were on a PC and thought you were speaking of when you opened a new tab in Firefox. If I'm not confused, read on. Here's this for Androids. Android, as does Apple, limits the features of "competing" browsers. Jerks. Scroll down to the "Firefox". instructions.                     where exactly did you find this in Gmail,,,,,,,,,,I cant find anything about passwords ?

                          Good grief. Just went to "passwords.google.com" and you're right. There they all were. Several sites I haven't visited in months/years. Wow! Thanks (I guess).

                            GG I don't do that thing about Google having all my stuff.

                            There were four passwords on my local machine.

                            Vinny you are a smart man....

                            And I only used Chrome when it had flash capabilities other than FF.

                            Ever since CastleCops I'm kinda paranoid about all that stuff.......

                              So these passwords are only those that I "saved" in Chrome or Chromium over the years; not other browsers? If so, I reckon it's just another path to the already saved passwords? It's quicker than Chrome>settings>show advanced settings>manage passwords>passwords. Great stuff.
