Installation--Not new to Kubuntu, but ....

I have been running Kubuntu 14.04, which I installed some 18 months ago. I am trying to install 15.10, and I'm having no luck. The installer shows me the partitions of my 2 hard drives. I do not want to repartition either drive. I want them to remain just as they are.

I want to install 15.10 on sda1, and I want the installer to reformat that partition before installing 15.10 there. I want sda2 to continue as my home directory, and I want sdb1 to be my swap space.

Can someone kindly tell me how to communicate that info to the installer. I have tried everything I can think of to get that info to register with the installer, and nothing I have tried has worked.

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

You need to select Manual on the Installation/Partitioning screen. That then takes you to the screen where you can select which partitions to use and what mount points to use for each. The / partition will always be formatted. You can tell the installer not to format the /home partition. But, keep in mind, that if you opt to retain -- not format -- an existing /home partition, you may ultimately have some problems with the new OS, as there will likely be some incompatible configuration settings from 14.04 that won't work/work well with 15.10. In most cases it is preferable to backup your /home partition and do a clean install of the new OS, and afterwards, copy needed data into the new installation.

I fiddled with it for > 30 minutes and finally gave up. I highlighted the sda1 partition where I want the code to go. The "Format?" column ends with a question mark. How does one answer that query? I tried checking the box, and my attempt failed. And how do I tell it that I want sdb1 to be my swap space? I discovered that only one row can be highlighted. I highlight row 1; then when I highlight another row, the highligting of the first row disappears.

after you highlight a partition that you want to work with you then click the "change" button down below the partition lists and you will then be presented with a dialog window where you select the where to mount and as what and if you want to format it or not ,,,,,,,,,then after you set that partition up you can select more.
