Please Teach Me to Leave Well Enough Alone

    Background:

    I have both Kubuntu 14.04 / Windows 10 on a HP 15 laptop.

Before Kubuntu install the restart function would stall / not work on a brand new pc. Very common problem.

A week or so ago a few HP updates were available and I installed them.

One was a Realtek driver which several folks in assorted forums thought was the restart culprit. It would stick as WIFI would be reinitialized.

The updated driver fixed the restart in both Windows and Kubuntu. Elated.

    Today:

Needed to scan a file to my computer. Msg on printer gave me the "check usb" connection. No remedy.

Went online and found what I though was a simple solution regarding a part of my pc printer tool (enable scan) which was missing.

The solution was to uninstall the printer software, delete all temp files, go to HP and reinstall printer software. Simple enough.

During the reinstall one part of it was updating assorted drivers, update the BIOS and other junk. The BIOS deal made me anxious but not enough to stop.

Did all that and was able to scan. Lost my restart function again and my dadgum wireless.

Went to HP and the Realtek driver (Dec 2015) was no longer available.

Open my drivers and see the new one (old) (Oct 2015).

I select "update driver" and, Got both my wifi and restart back. Happy dance.

    Summary:

I just can't help myself at times either out of curiosity or perceived need from messing with settings, software, etc. Please help.

          Ha! Funny story!

          Here's a funnier idea:

Just for kicks. When it is slow around here, I think I'll start posting "guilt posts." I'm gonna keep up with the latest "BIOS" firmware updates for several leading PC makers (HP, ASUS, etc.), and I'll post them here as an announcement, or informational post, or fyi post--with the links. See how many people can be roped in to updating their firmware ... ! .

(Disclosure: In theory, I'm prone to want to know about the latest BIOS updates to my motherboard. In practice, I never touch it unless there is a specific functionality lacking that the new version will fix. If it ain't broken, don't fix it; even if that means running many years without a firmware update! That strategy--so far--has worked for me.)

No way! Firmware was also some of the updates. I will never scan again! Wonder if I can get the wireless side of my printer to work again?

One thing, now I also use 14.04, but have none of these problems. In fact, the way I sometimes abuse my OS, it's a wonder it works at all! Not really, but it feels that way at times, it takes a lot of pounding and booting/re-booting experiments, but as of yet, no problems.

Ah, details .... just to clarify ...
I (as a rule) don't update my firmware at the ASUS motherboard site when new versions are released (unless I have very good reason to do so -- to fix something).
But I do accept updates called "firmware" that I'm offered through the Muon updater.
