Log out but no shutdown on K menu

kubuntu worked for a wk on my laptop.  Everything ok, even added applications w/o problems.  Closed lid for 30 minutes, never started again.

    Laptop:
    iBook 466SE - PPC Kubuntu 6.06 CD
    320 MB / 20 GB HD / DVD-ROM

New install from CD (w/o Xserve update bug), stall on 2nd kubuntu screen.  Use CTRL-ALT-F1 to get command line.  Use startx and get desktop.  But I only get " log out " w/o the shutdown or restart option on the K menu.  Cannot access administrator sys settings.  SU failure.

    ___________
After "logging out" I get the following:

    Log file: " /var/log/Xorg.0.log" , Time: sat jan 2 1904

(EE) error opening security policy file /etc/x11/xserver/SecurityPolicy
Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics envent device found (checked 16 nodes)
    Query no Synaptics: 6003C8

Error opening/dev/wacom : No such file or directory
    (EE) xf86openSerial : Cannot open device /dev/wacom

waiting for X server to shut down
    ____________

Is this same problem or two ? Note clock, is this my bios battery or bug ?  Tried to provide as much info as possible.   Thanks in advance for help.

---I'm hoping for a possible fix.  I had to reload Mac OS, then re-install Kubuntu.  It kept trying to do a live CD, but that don't seem work on my laptop.

also though i may be a big KDE fan you may be intrested in trying xbuntu its less resource hungry and as such may be the fix you need. I dont know and agian im writing because no one seems to be replying to you.

---I tried xubuntu.  The live CD works & it installed with shutdown menus and no error at end.  But I do not see a trash can, no battery indicator.  I'll have to hop over to the ubuntu forums to see if I find a fix.  Later I can see if it can handle adding KDE.

BTW, xubuntu does run quicker.  Oddly, the iBook can handle Mac OS 10.3 & use MS Office well.  I think it chokes on installing too much stuff.  It should install kubuntu first, and make you reboot to load the software.
