kubuntu 15.04 problems - or my ignorance!

From your home directory can you post the output of

ls -l

did you not just try to restore a backup of your home ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it looks like you extracted it a bit wrong.

if your files are in /home/bumpy/home/home/bumpy/ lets see

ls -l /home/bumpy/home/home/bumpy/

The bolded red directory is "extra"; it isn't part of the default folders in a users /home directory. Did you create this? Did you create the other folders 'within' this directory as well? Or are the default folders simlinked into this 'home' folder?

This is a likely scenario; at least the /home/bumpy/home isn't a link. I managed something similar once and it murder to sort out.
