In the hopes that this flops over to page 42 ( and who doesn't like 42) I'll chuck in a little explanation.

When you were booting the console was defaulting to a too low resolution to allow the Plymouth loader screen to show. It took me much too long to realise what meant by scrolling DOS screen or I'd have mentioned the fix a long time ago It may be taking a little longer to get to the login screen now as Plymouth has to start up and stop. For interest, you can still see the scrolling text by pressing Esc.

@Qqmike: The terminal is simpler, it just doesn't look like it. Well as long as you don't accidentally wander in to the realm of vi.

Hi elijathegold, yeah, the terminal is handy, for many, many things. Sometimes, like certain file management, where there is a bunch of "monkey motion" required to get the job done, I really like a good GUI. Fixing apt? using dd? mounting media (that "should" already be mounted in GUI ...), many, many useful things about the CLI. The extent of my depth of knowledge about CLI (read: not too deep), is here, as logan01 cited:

Thanks, btw, for jumping in here to help. WE appreciate it!

Which reminds me, why didn't WE think to mention this?

@ logan01, "Root Actions Service Menu" in Dolphin. Very handy to have. For example, suppose you navigate to a file, like /etc/default/grub. You can right-click on the grub file and select root actions, open, and it opens where you have root privileges to work on it, save it, exit.

Read all about it, easy to install. Btw, get the one written by 'our' kubicle here (scroll down through the list of offerings until you hit it):

Gimme it, Now! Guess what? Had my pc turned off over night, just now turned in on, in a few seconds it opened the boot option page, selected ubuntu, and bam, my desktop! As soon as desktop appears, bam, it's ready to work in! No delays of any sort! Geez I'm good. And I must get that specific Root Actions Service Menu. I can do some real damage if I can ever get to where undamaged files reside. And I blindly found a solution to the nearly washed out window indicators in the taskbar. https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...-Apps-Question Thanks a bunch and post more cool things to do. Viva Kubuntu! Now I haven't the foggiest of what ya'll were speaking of regarding resolution. Does scrolling DOS screen have another name that perhaps folks with lesser backgrounds than us would know it by?

Here we go again. Sorry. So I first

In that friggin' terminal (torture chamber) I do this: sudo apt-get install ruby

Get out of the torture chamber and do this: Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin... -> Services -> Download New Services...

              And that's it?

You already have Ruby installed! No need to do it. Just click the Install button in that services menu where kubicle's root actions program is listed.

I'm gonna type up another thing you MUST do asap ... But you can go ahead and get the root actions menu and try it out.

Ya gotta know how to get programs. Now.

Two choices: by command line and by GUI.

By GUI, a favorite here is Muon, really, really nice and easy:
K > Applications > System > Software Center (Muon Discover)

BUT ........ that ain't the Muon you really need. Muon Discover shows you only the common, usual, popular apps/programs. YOU need the professional Muon Package Manager:

                    Open Muon Discover.
In the search box (upper right, I think?), enter Muon Package Manage.
                    Click Install.
                    Done.
Find it in the same place:
K > Applications > System > Package Manager (Muon Package Manager)

Open Muon Package Manager, look around. try typing something in the search box, like type
                    ruby
and it pops up in the list below and shows you it is installed.

More: If you see a program listed in the Muon Package Manager, and it is not installed, to install it simple right-click on it and select Mark for Installation. Then at the top of the Muon screen, click Apply Changes.

                    More:

Go to, again, K > Applications > System > Muon Package Manager and this time Right-Click on it and Add to Favorites: the Favorites are the apps listed by simply clicking the K button, very convenient. You can remove Muon Package Manager from the Favorites by right-clicking it (in the Favorites list) and selecting Remove from Favorites and it will still be found, as before, here: K > Applications > System > Package Manager--Muon Package Manager.

                    More:

Open Muon Package Manager, click the View tab at top, View History, and there you will find a list by date of what Muon has done for you (installed, un-installed, and updates) -- handy for troubleshooting problems.

And there's more you can mess with in Muon. And I'm fairly sure you will.

You can also install apps/programs by CLI, at Konsole (or your favorite terminal).

For example, to install a program called ruby at the terminal, simply:
                    sudo apt-get install ruby

See the "man page" for apt-get (the "manual"):
                    Open Konsole.
                    Type
                    man apt-get
                    press Enter.
Navigate by up and down arrows or by page up/down.
To quit that manual, type q.

I won't get into apt-get here, I think it is in my Konsole how-to you cited, and you'll find the guys here may have their own CLI preferences. apt-get is kind of a standard, easy, vanilla, CLI program, no problems, no expertise needed.

                        This:
                        • Add new services.

Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin... -> Services -> Download New Services...
                        • For example, a very useful service is the "Root Actions Servicemenu", which allows many functions to be performed with root (superuser or "sudo") permissions. This is necessary, for example, for editing text files that have root permissions.

Yeah, and there IS a search window in that final screen/menu, too, where you can type root action .. and it narrows down your looking for it. Hit Install and that's it.

I guess it's installed now. I saw no evidence of a greenbar, etc showing percentage status. But from where I installed it I now have the option to uninstall, therefore I must have it? It went to /bin somewhere. Now what did you hurried write up? Must be a goodie.
