Yes, that's right! Your partitions are still good, but you DO have to tell the installer HOW you want those partitions used (root /, home, swap) -- same steps you did before. An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way. Charles Bukowski

yes, highlight each one -- one at a time, then for the currently highlighted partition hit Change and set it up (as /, home, or swap No need to reformat anything except it MAY insist that it reformats Swap--if so, that's OK, let it format the Swap again. An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. getting closer. selected the swap partition and selected "swap area" for the "use as". selected another (sda8) which i know is my root and selected "ext4 journaling file system" and it gave it the root symbol (/).
I now have the home partition but it doesn't say "home" when i go to change it there is no "home". Doesn't it also get the "ext4 journaling file system" designator. The other choices don't ring a bell. C'mon, we're getting close.Kubuntu 14.04 / KDE 4.13.3 / GRUB Version: 0.97-29ubuntu66

the choices for change are:
ext4 journaling file system
ext3 journaling file system
btrfs journaling file system
jfs journaling file system
xfs journaling file system
fat16 file system
fat32 file system
swap area
reserved bios boot area
efi boot partition
physical volume for encryption
do not use this partition..
Nothing mentioning home.Kubuntu 14.04 / KDE 4.13.3 / GRUB Version: 0.97-29ubuntu66

sda9 says ext4 in the Type column but has nothing else and there is no "home" to choose when I click change.Kubuntu 14.04 / KDE 4.13.3 / GRUB Version: 0.97-29ubuntu66

crap. I clicked install and now this: the file system on /dev/sda8 assigned to / has not been marked for formatting. Directories containing systems files (/etc, /lib, /usr, /var, ...) that already exist under any defined mountpoint will be deleted during the install. Please ensure you have backed up any critical data before installing.
I then have the choice of clicking continue or go back. sda8 is my /root partition. the window i'm doing all this in does have a format column with a clickable button for each /dev/sda.Last edited by logan01; Sep 09, 2015, 09:41 AM.Kubuntu 14.04 / KDE 4.13.3 / GRUB Version: 0.97-29ubuntu66
