Ok. To answer the efi boot question. I am now at the Boot Option Menu. What I select says "USB Hard Drive (UEFI) - SanDisk"

    The 2 other options are:
    Boot from EFI File
OS boot Manager (UEFI) - Windows Boot Manager (ST500LT012-1DG142)

and then it shows i can press f10 for BIOS Setup Option or hit esc to exit.

I don't know how to do this: check out the ESP existing
change settings in UEFI firmware and in Windows
use rEFInd to boot into Kubuntu (if you can! we hope)
      re-install grub from within Kubuntu
(easy, quick and done, we hope)

and this: Plan B, RodJ: re-install Kubuntu AFTER adjusting settings in Windows and firmware and making sure that the one Windows-provided ESP is present

In particular, I would definitely disable Secure Boot and Fast Startup (in both Windows and the firmware).
I unchecked fast startup and I can't find Secure Boot.

Disable Fast Startup in BOTH Windows (inside Windows) and in your computer's UEFI firmware. Disable Secure Boot in the firmware. Make sure in your firmware settings that you are booting in UEFI mode (NOT in BIOS mode, NOT in CSM mode) -- there are boot menus in your computer's firmware setup that contains all this stuff. Every computer is different.

        That's the right choice.

I don't know how to do this: check out the ESP existing
Boot into Windows and use whatever Windows disk management utility is to see the HDD and the partitions (or volumes or whatever Windows call them). Look for that small ESP partition as detailed above.

use rEFInd to boot into Kubuntu (if you can! we hope)
Use the link to my how-to to make a rEFInd bootable CD (or make one any way you can in Windows). Then boot your computer with it, first entering the firmware to select that CD in UEFI mode to boot from. Then see if Kubuntu is on the rEFInd boot menu shown on the screen.

re-install grub from within Kubuntu (easy, quick and done, we hope)
See above for instructions on this.

That sounds like what you need to do to turn off Fast Startup and Secure Boot in the firmware; make sure in your firmware settings that you are booting in UEFI mode (NOT in BIOS mode, NOT in CSM mode) -- there are boot menus in your computer's firmware setup that contains all this stuff. Every computer is different.

I don't understand the reference to firmware. I'm in bios and staring at the enabled "secure boot". Fast Startup was unchecked days ago in my programs manager.

I have now disabled secure boot in my bios. I shall now hit f10 to save changes and exit, or not?

I know ya'll are busy. I'm going to reboot so that I have secure boot disable. I'm then going to try the install again from my live kubuntu in 10 minutes.

Crap. Before I try again, I am now in disk management I can't swear to it, but it appears my partitions of root, home, swap still exists. I can't tell because they have no names associated with them however each one is near equal in size as to the size I made them and each says "Healthy (Primary Partition)". SOS / HELP / !!!!!!!! Do you agree they likely are those partitions therefore I skip that part when I attempt install?

Correct: disable Secure Boot, hit F10 to Save & exit.

I hate Windows. Yeah, that's how it will display your partitions. You should also see that ESP!!!!!!!! Called a System or Windows System something like, 100-200 MB (or actually anything small-ish like 100-500 MB), FAT 32.

-->>>>> You will also see this list of partitions during the installation of Kubuntu in that partitioning step screen. It should show everything: the esp, and your 3 partitions. It is right there up front after you click the Manual (Installation Type) choice.

Gonna be running around here all morning, self-employed (or as the joke goes, self-un-employed ...), and not semi-retired but quasi-retired ...

there is a 260 MB efi system partition. so if i see those partitions during install, do i just click to the next step or what?

That's fine, sounds right. (I make my own ESPs to be 512 MB, but it can be any size from 100 MB +++; Windows seems to make them on the smaller end, but 260 MB will be FAR more than you will ever need, even if you install several more Linux OSs.)

Yeah, no need to change anything -- those partitions and the ext4 format remains good.

what i see on "prepare partitions" are several /dev/ whatevers. One of them is /dev/sda3 which is pretty equal to the sum of the 3 partitions and under the column "used", it says unknown. do i select it or anything or just hit "install now"?
