True. So if I do the manual partitioning, it will not put "along side Windows"? What happens? How do I get GParted if it won't download/install to my F: drive (usb)?
You can install Kubuntu alongside Windows using the Manual method because you are going to force the partitioning to be that way (when you do the partitioning, either with GParted or in the installation session--as your last link shows). Remember, you can use GParted from a live Kubuntu session from the live Kubuntu installer USB BEFORE you select Install (i.e., before you click Install, you will click Try Kubuntu and get a live session--like what I am in right now). In your live session you can install GParted (as explained above in one of my posts) and use it from there. When done, you click on Install Kubuntu and go at it, selecting the Manual method and there seeing and using the 3 partitions you just created in GParted.

A fresh start might make sense. And thinking about the options. This stuff can make you crazy after awhile, and the problem becomes PBTKAC (is that the right acrynom?).

I'm fixin' to try the install and see where it takes me. If it gets all screwed up and I end up with partial data on my pc, I can get rid of it?

I can get rid of it?
Yes, you just re-create partitions fresh again. That's the easy way, unless you want me to rig up another dd command way ...

Not sure how long I will hang in here, though.

I hear you. I've had maybe 8 hours rest the past 72 hours and I'm flat drained. But I must try this before I fall asleep.

I'll probably check in myself. What's the definition of insanity. Blah, blah, blah, and expecting different results?
