If you come back, here's the options for downloading GParted. Looks like I'll use another usb. If so. Do I literally boot to the GParted live usb and try the partitioning, get out of it, insert the kubuntu usb and select install?
Yes, exactly. Two steps. Lots of monkey motion. The other option was as I posted above -- to do all this in the live Kubuntu "Try" session. Use the GParted version that is for newer systems, for 64-bit, for UEFI/EFI--whatever it says like that.

    (I'm not really back.)

      GParted:
amd64 64-bit version runs on x86-64 based computers, with ability to access more than 4 gigabytes of memory, and supports use of multiple processor cores.
For newer (>2010) computers with UEFI instead of legacy BIOS try this one.
      THAT one.

The GParted iso will download to my windows download folder. Can I cut/paste it to my usb and it should work?

No. A basic copy will not work (it doesn't pick up all the partitioning and such that is needed on a live flash drive). You need to use dd! Just so happens, ...

and it works for the gparted iso (I know because I experimented with this, tried it, helped confirm a bug, the bug was fixed ...)

In fact, I just did this using dd to make the live Kubuntu USB we are talking about (the newer version):

            Code:
            mike@mike-desktop:~$ sudo dd if=/home/mike/Downloads/kubuntu-[COLOR=#0000ff][B]14.04.3[/B][/COLOR]-desktop-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=16M
            [sudo] password for mike:
            65+1 records in
            65+1 records out
            1101889536 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 153.836 s, 7.2 MB/s

              This is sweet. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/35676/how-to-choose-a-partition-scheme-for-your-linux-pc/

If I select install on my kubuntu live usb, shouldn't it offer this manual method of partitioning and then I can follow the example (link)? Or I can download GParted.tonight and start up again tomorrow.

The link: that's exactly what we are talking about under the Manual method (except all the partitions will already be set up ahead of time by GParted).

Yes, it should work. As I said (somewhere above) you CAN try this (even though I said that some of us FEEL we don't want to trust the partitioning to the installer partitioner). Many people, I'm sure, DO do it that way. So, yes, you can give it a try. It will most probably work without a catch. Many ways to go--true for most things in Linux, there usually isn't just one single best way, there are usually many opinions.

I'm wiped out. I think in a tad I'll try the install knowing I can quit at any time.
When quitting, it hasn't dumped part of the OS to my computer has it?

                        OK, results of my test:

I have been (all along) using a live Kubuntu USB from this iso:
                        kubuntu-14.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso

Now, I am using a live Kubuntu USB from this iso:
                        kubuntu-14.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso

Both give me the same screenshot you posted in Post #40, saying I could install Kubuntu alongside Windows. But I am not given that option on the Installation Type page with either the 14.04.2 or the14.04.3. The closest thing to it is the Manual optionon both 14.04.3 and 14.04.3If this is true (and I think it is), it's not good for new people trying to install Kubuntu alongside their Windows.

I think it depends on when you quit, I don't know. I mean, if it has downloaded all its files and started installing and configuring, you wouldn't want to Quit that, right?

Maybe better to start fresh tomorrow, especially as you may try the partitioning (either w/GParted or with the live installer as shown on that last link you posted).

True. So if I do the manual partitioning, it will not put "along side Windows"? What happens? How do I get GParted if it won't download/install to my F: drive (usb)?

I'm using and posting now from the live Kubuntu 14.04 USB session. Think I'll get re-booted back into my HDD-installed K 14.04 ...
