Please take a look at this HowTo from the Ubuntu community help site. Pay special attention to section 4 on "Modems supported by the Smartlink Driver", and the last sentence (17) in subsection 4.5 "Dapper 6.06 special instructions". I hope that you have a mdv92xpa.
