There is something very strange with my system, all my music players, and there seem to be a few of them, 'play' the tracks very very quickly - so quickly I hear nothing. The suspects are Amorak, Juk and Noatun.
The only one that works normally is VLC, and that completely disappears leaving the music playing if you turn on any visualisations, which means that I have to kill it with Ksysguard.
Can anyone cast any light on this or suggest a good music player.

I see you are all as mystified as me - is this a Codec issue do you think?
