    Low Memory, Result: Crash.

Someone please share what they know about lowering the memory used by Kubuntu. It has crashed today, yesterday and even the first day i installed. I WILL NOT give up on linux and/or kubuntu; i love them both. Please advise me on the steps to take to lower memory usage ( be clear; Me = Newbie. )

    Thanks,
    Paul.

So how much memory do you have, what programs are causing you too crash?

      128 mbs of RAM.
I know that's a low amount of RAM but it shouldn't crash.
      What applications? Any/All.
Over 500 mb's of Swap space.
I just did a Dist-Upgrade; all seems fine.
I tested, evil: opened like 28 different applications at a time, and no crash.
Only took about 4-5 to crash me before.

      Paul.

        Re: Low Memory, Result: Crash.

To debug this, you can see if there is one program using all your memory.  Press Ctrl-Esc to bring up a list of processes (only works in KDE, not GNOME), and order them by VmSize descending.  There might be some process that is guzzling memory (Amarok seems to do so on mine, I have to close it every week or so).

Some tips for lowering memory usage in KDE - you might have to disable some of the KDE options/services.  Have a look in control center/KDE Components/Service Manager, and try disabling thins you think you could live without.

Also, when you say crash, what exactly is happening?
