    adept questions

I just installed Kubuntu after using xandros for the last few months. There are some programs that I need to install however they either appear as grayed out in adept or it shows the category the program would be under but nothing else shows up for me to select for installation.

I also wanted to change the repositories however the option does not show up under view like the online documentation indicates.

    Thanks
    Richie

      Re: adept questions

Tried that but it kept telling me that there was no directory even though I was following the example exactly.

I would like to do this through the gui until I understand the command line better. I don't like typing in commands that I don't fully understand. I would like to find out why the options are not available through adept. Thanks for the help.

To mess with repositories through Adept, click on the "Adept" drop down in the upper left corner, then "manage repositories." This will allow you to enable, disable, and add repositories.

On what step of the psychocats directions are you getting the no directory error?

          Re: adept questions

I too moved over from Xandros a few weeks ago. there is a big difference in the way this and Xandros handle things.
I don't seem to have an issue with adept graying out. Are you being asked for you password? I've had some problem with enter kdesu in other areas. I just closed down the app and re-opened it, so far it's worked.
Are you talking about the gray out under view-manage repostories. From what I can see it show the files themselves, can edit them. go to show list to and use the search. You may also have to look at the grome packages to see if somthing you need shows up there It seem to be a little easier to use synaptic, it can been download from adept.
It's been a real challenge to get Kubuntu up and running the way I need it.
          Hope this helps a little.

When I click on Adept in the top left corner the only option I have is Quit.

On the psychocats thing I got stuck on the first step.

            I have entered the password.
I have tired clossing the program and reopening. I have tried restarting. Nothing works. It seems that I am just missing a lot of the options.

            Thanks for your help.

              Perhaps you're running the simplified 'adept_installer' ?

There should be a separate icon for Adept Manager (the full featured package manager)
You can also try Alt+F2 and
              Code:
              kdesu adept

                Re: adept questions

check /etc/apt/sources.list - if you weren't connected to the internet when you installed, dapper couldn't check for security updates and the necessary lines are "commented out" in sources.list. remove the # in front of the lines that are proper urls. i recently installed dapper and this happened to me. you have to edit the sources.list as root. once you open sources.list in konqueror you can right click in the window and you will have a choice to "open as root".

i'm a recent convert from suse - so if anything i said is way off -- please forgive.

I found the problem. Adept was getting the wrong dns and was not using the 2nd dns. Seems to be a problem related to my DSL modem. Anyways I got that fixed now. Thanks for your help.

Thanks very much. Having tried many distributions I thought that KUBUNTU 6.10 was going to be the one to settle upon, but it has taken me hours to find out how to install THUNDERBIRD, FIREFOX and SYNAPTIC. apt-get returned a blank. I had uncommented all the repositories but it wasn't until I found your helpful advice that I managed to install the above.

My views of KUBUNTU 6.10 after a few days
                    1) Lovely to use, stable and fast.
                    2) A pig to adapt, but these are early days.
plus - any distro that can be installed easily by a non-command line junkie, onto a USB external drive, and works first time with only a few problems, has got to be good.

Actually, if I was answering now I would also add that installing Automatix2
                      http://getautomatix.com/wiki/index.p...tion&Itemid=38

Provides a rapid and reliable way of getting all sorts of goodies! Some people are sniffy about the fact that you shouldn't need to run third party scripts to get you started - but this is really a top piece of work. By contrast it will take me quite some time to configure Fedora Core 6! This is a key advantage for the Ubuntu distros.
