If you have a standalone computer you probably don't need an antivirus program for Linux. See for example http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/
Clamav is available from the repositories through Synaptic package manager.

assuming that you have your /etc/apt/sources.list in order...?
open up a console
type:
sudo apt-get install clamav -y
enter your admin password
it will now install
to run it in a specific directory move to that directory with the cd command
example cd /home
to check all files recursively
type clamscan -r
Hi
if you like a handy graphic interface you could use KlamAV which uses clamAV as a backend you will find it in Adept just select install and apply Changes.
For installation and set up this uses a very simple wizard.
Curious.....are you running an e-mail server ? If so, then you certainly need a virus scanner. If you aren't, then a virus scanner isn't going to be of any use to you.
With that said, I don't run an e-mail server yet I do run clamav. Mainly because I have a lot of files, debs/rpms and various things, that I get from other people onto my system for my repository.
As stated above, you really don't need anti-virus software in Linux unless you're running a mail server for Windows users.
