      OK, This is what I got:
      Code:
       apt-get install -f kubuntu-desktop
      Reading package lists... Done
      Building dependency tree
      Reading state information... Done
      kubuntu-desktop is already the newest version.
      The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
        libblas3 libgfortran3 liblapack3 libmikmod3 libportmidi0 libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-mixer1.2 libsdl-ttf2.0-0 libsdl1.2debian libsmpeg0 python-configobj python-numpy python-pygame
        tk-tile
      Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
      0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 28 not upgraded.
      I don't know how to reinstall with apt-get and I'm afraid to do an uninstall/install - I may have to back everything up and redo the OS if I can't recover.
      Maybe what I should try is to reinstall all the headers that autoremove removed that one time. However, if you looked them over and there's nothing that would have affected the sound, I'm not sure what else to do besides reinstalling the OS again.

        this was a "simulation" the -s switch in the apt-get comand makes it just show what it would have done if it was a real run .

        so do the simulation and lets see what it outputs

        Code:
        [FONT=monospace][COLOR=#ff0000]sudo apt-get -s install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop[/COLOR][/FONT]

          Pretty much the same thing I got before.

          I think what I'll do is reinstall what was removed by AutoRemove and see if that makes any difference. In the meantime, if you can think of anything else that might work, I'm open to suggestions. I'll post the results when I'm done.

            Reinstalling the AutoRemove stuff didn't help.

            Hey, I was digging through the log and noticed that I did an update before I noticed that the sound was gone:

            Code:
            Start-Date: 2015-04-11  14:50:16
            Install: libpangomm-1.4-1:amd64 (2.34.0-1.1, automatic), libcairomm-1.0-1:amd64 (1.10.0-1ubuntu3, automatic), libglibmm-2.4-1c2a:amd64 (2.42.0-1, automatic), libsigc++-2.0-0c2a:amd64 (2.2.11-4, automatic), libcanberra-gtk3-module:amd64 (0.30-2ubuntu1, automatic), libgtkmm-3.0-1:amd64 (3.12.0-1.1, automatic), libcanberra-gtk3-0:amd64 (0.30-2ubuntu1, automatic), libatkmm-1.6-1:amd64 (2.22.7-2.1, automatic), pavucontrol:amd64 (2.0-2)
            End-Date: 2015-04-11  14:50:32
            Anything here look problematic?

              I also thought it might be a good idea to try your reinstall trick on pulseaudio - here's the results:
              Code:
               sudo apt-get install --reinstall pulseaudio
              Reading package lists... Done
              Building dependency tree

              The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
                libblas3 libgfortran3 liblapack3 libmikmod3 libportmidi0 libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-mixer1.2 libsdl-ttf2.0-0 libsdl1.2debian libsmpeg0 python-configobj python-numpy python-pygame
                tk-tile
              Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
              The following extra packages will be installed:
                pulseaudio-module-x11
