I am having a WiFi Connection problem and need help,

This is a long lasting problem for me. Over 6 months without wireless connection.

After replacing a broken HDD, the repair disk did not include several drivers, among them network drivers, so I was unable to obtain the needed drivers. I was dual-boot with Windows Vista, so without the necessary drivers installed, I could not access the Internet when I installed Kubuntu.

It is and has been very confusing, because in the past, the Ethernet connection happened automatically when I installed the Linux OS.

Recently I was able to get an Ethernet Cable connection, so I again have access to the Internet, but wireless does not work. It has been so long since I needed to make this connection that I cannot remember how it is done, and the Internet help confuses me a bit.

I have a DLink router and have typed 192.168.0.1 in the search bar and gotten to the appropriate page for installing DLink wireless, but after trying several times to establish the connection, I have failed. I have located a screen that evidences my previous settings, at least some of them, however I understand so little, I haven't been able to proceed to conclusion.

If there are packages that need to be installed, I do not know what they are. Additionally, I am unsure where to find certain required information, as well as, complete the DLink forms.

I have owned my router long enough to not be eligible for free support and have had many current expenses that make hiring a professional at this time impossible. If anyone can and is willing to help me, I would appreciate it.

you should not half to mess with your router as long as you know your network name (ESSID) and password.

is your wireless card (in the computer)working ,,,,,, iwconfig and ifconfig should show ,, post the output .

if you click the network icon in the system tray do you see access points for wireless ?

I don't understand, Vinny. Before my HDD crashed and was replaced, wifi worked fine. Now it is like I don't have a wifi capability.

I am currently connected using an Ethernet cable, while waiting for my memory to be returned for my Desktop PC. I haven't had the use of my laptop for over 6 months now. Ethernet connection was not available to me until just recently, and there is no current evidence of wifi capability. I don't know what "No wireless extensions means". I have the same problem with a dual-boot Vista reinstall. 5 drivers are missing for that Operating System. I am very confused. It used to work great until the HDD failure and replacement. Vista was installed using a recovery disk. My SSID is STEVEN-WIFI and the password has not changed to my knowledge.

When I put 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of the browser, I get transferred to the Dlink site. I have memory that that is where I set up my wifi originally. I am short of money right now and cannot hire Dlink to help me, and find instructions on the site confusing. I did restart my router. Thanks for any help you can provide.

their is no need to do this ,,,,,and when you do , you are not at the Dlink "site" you are in your routers setup screen .

sorry ,, I left a switch off the ifconfig command post this
        Code:
        ifconfig -a
        and this
        Code:
        iwlist scan
these are just to see if the wireless device is working at all and just not configured as yet.

Hi Vinny, I felt you probably would not want this, but I included it in case I was wrong.

In a search following this result, I found a reply that indicated it might work. It was a TBABill back in 2011. He gave the instruction:

              sudo rmmod -f ath5k

              sudo rfkill unblock all

              sudo modprobe ath5k

I don't know him but I know and trust you. I thought I should run it by you before I try it. Thanks for the help

After a "restart" these warnings come on screen:

                  no secrets were provided, and

                  Connectilon on "STEVEN-WIFI" deactivated.
