Kubuntu Backports repo ?

After adding backports repo and installing plasma 5 should you delete the repo?

I was worried about receiving other things that are in testing stage or is ok to leave repo active and installed?

There is no plasma 5 stuff in the kubuntu-backports ppa.

If you are installing Plasma 5 in a 14.10 system, the ppas for that are deprecated, and caused breakages on a number of systems, and are not recommended.

If you are running 15.04, you already have plasma 5, and do not need to add anything.


the kubuntu-backports ppa will not have any packages in it for 15.04, anyway. This repo contains newer KDE stuff (from the same major version) that is backported from a newer release, usually the devel one.

Also, kubuntu-backports will not have experimental things in it, only official releases.

Thanks for the post. I was going to start a new thread, but this seems on-topic. I'm interested in an install that will stay on a late KDE4 until the new stuff matures a bit more. So, I've got Kubuntu 14.04 going as a virtualbox VM for testing.

I found this ppa for 4.14.2 on the Kubuntu site (can't post the link as my account is just registered) , based on the post above, am I correct that this will never install plasma 5 or applications 14.12, etc? In reality 14.04's standard 4.13.x is fine, but if I can get 4.14, ah why not .

No, 14.04 will never see plasma 5.
However, the ppa (guessing it is this one ) will get you the latest backported version of KDE SC in your 14.04 system. Generally, backports come from the Kubuntu release just after the one you are using, so whatever is in the official repos for 14.10 can be backported to 14.04, but not from 15.04 (and in this special case, 14.10 will not likely see Plasma 5 backported from 15.04)

Yes, the first ppa I referred to was ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports from http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-appl...-platform-4142 . I figured kubuntu.org would be the most reliable source. Now I'm looking at https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/ . I see some of the same names on the projects, and for example it looks like some filenames are nearly the same.

The kdelibs4 deb is 4.14.2-0ubuntu1~ubuntu14.04~ppa1 (https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ninja...+build/6460365), and the file I installed from the ppa in the kubuntu.org news post is kdelibs-bin_4%3a4.14.2-0ubuntu1~ubuntu14.04~ppa1_amd64.deb . This is all the same stuff isn't it?

no ,,,not the same thing ,,,,you want your first PPA ,,,,,do this to add it to your system.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

the ninjas PPA is packagers on the first level of ascension to developer and prob not for daily use .

and ,"nearly the same" is totally not the same in linux ........ you must be exact in all you type or see or install .

typing "start x" will not start a GUI it must be "startx"
foo-3.2.1-ubuntu1 is not the same as foo-3.2.1-ubuntu2 ,,,,but probably an upgrade to foo-3.2.1-ubuntu1

so if not exactly the same name it is not the same thing .
